MGB Windshield replacement

I have to replace the windshield on my '74 MGB roadster due to chips in the glass. I have a good windshield in frame from a '77 B I used to own.

Having read the many nightmare stories about putting on new gaskets and remounting a windshield, I am seriously considering placing the '77 windshield on without renewing the gaskets.

The windshield to frame gaskets look great and are still pliable. The frame to body gasket is still pliable but looks a bit dry on the front edge of the lip.
I believe I would need to remove one of the end pillars to replace the frame to body gasket. I don't want to do that since I have a well sealed frame and have read nightmares about rusted screws and such in disassembly.

My question is, should I use some sort of butyl or silicone sealant between the body and the frame gasket? Should I replace the pillar gaskets or simply seal them the same way I do the frame to body gasket?

Interested in others opinions.

I just installed the new gaskets under the pillars with no sealant and have no leaks on the 72. PJ

The leaks are generally at the corners where the lower seal meets the pillars and the pillar seals. Using silicone sealer is probably good "insurance."

Not a fun job!

But I agree with Doc - can't hurt.

And welcome to the Forum from Clarksville!

Isn't installing MGB windshields a blast! You couldn't have more fun at an amusement park! I feel sorry for all of those who have never experienced it, especially with all new rubber seals. If you haven't done it, you don't know what your missing! :highly_amused:  PJ

As you can see, I'm in a good mood this morning and trying to keep people happy! :encouragement:

As I've posted in the past: I'd rather do three clutch replacements on an MGB than one windshield R&R. :jester:

When you decide to tackle it, let me know; I may be able to break away and give you a hand.

Thanks for all the encouragement, or semi-encouragement. Mickey I appreciate the offer but my son is also an MG guy and he will be in on the job. I have about decided to put in new frame to body seals and pillar seals but not disassemble the frame. I will try the John Twist You Tube method for replacing the frame to body seal. I am retired so I can give it as much time as is needed, or as my patience will allow.

I think that the "chrome" trim is the hardest part -
or at least that's what I've been told.
