Windshield Removal

Can you remove the windshield frame and glass without removing the dash facia?

Yes - look up under the outer edges of the dash & you'll see the 2 huge bolts that hold the windshield in place...remove them & the little Phillips screw between them along with the center windshield stay rod & she lifts right off.

Along the sme lines, I've got riveted caps in the upper door jamb area that cover the bolt heads. Are these a standard thing or a DPO. I've got a 74B and did not notice them on the 74BGT.

Standard.

As for replacing it with dash in-situ: DON'T remove the Phillips head screw in between the bolts. That keeps the floating anchors in place. With a small mirror and some gymnastics it CAN be done.

Good point, Doc....sorry

Oh, if you drill out the rivets in those caps, you can see the back side of the bolts holding the windshield in place....when reinstalling it, you can align the windshield with the caps off - afterward, you can rivet them back in.

I removed mine with the dash intact, but had to remove it to get the thing back in. My early steel dash comes right out, so it was no big deal for me. I don't know about the later cars tho'

I must have gotten lucky...I helped a friend do it once to change rubber...she unbolted it while I pulled it off. Then we put the new bubber on and set it back in place...I moved it right onto the body and she tighened it back up. We were in an out of the job in less than an hour, including clean up and a beer or two.

Bruce, you're my new hero. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

That reinstall task took me too many tries before I could do one in anything like an hour or less... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/bow.gif

Ah, Doc, but what Bruce didn't say was inferred in this statement: "she unbolted it while I pulled it off"......tiny hands!

But, he's still my hero also.....
