Spent part of the afternoon polishing the windshield, which brings me to some installation questions.

1. The Seal #4 - seemed to have had some adhesive holding it to the windshield frame - is this correct? if so, what?

2. The seal #3 - how do I install it - just slide it along? with soap and water?

3. Any secrets I need to know to install the windshield?

4. trivia bonus question - on each vertical bracket (the two sides) there are two female "snaps" one on top and one on bottom. What are these for?

The one on the top is for a little flap of the rag top. The bottom one for a tonneau?

I don't think the seal#4 is supposed to have any adhesive. I use lots of liquid soap with just a little water on all of the contact areas. The #3 seal is slide in with lots of patients and time. Be sure the bottom WS frame has the right curve and isn't bent as a lot of them are. Also make sure the slot #3 goes in is VERY clean(I use a small stainless wire brush and a small bent screw driver) and straight.Use about a 3/16 string between the #3 seal and the body when you start setting the assembly on the car and you can pull on it as you settle it down,pulling the rubber lip out.Again I use a lot of soapy water there also.Also the #3 seal has to be fitted to the post on each end and on top of #4 to make it seal right.
I made a couple of tools for use on the rubber that help a bunch. One is a 1/8 screw driver with rounded edges and smoothed with 320 sandpaper. Another is a 3/4X3/4 hardwood stick about 6in long with a long wedge on one end for pushing and pulling. The wood shouldn't scratch the frame or paint
. Lots of patients are needed and some help if any is handy.

well seal #3 is in tonight - took hours - actually I couldn't slide it all the way - so, a dental pick saved my life - allowed me to work the rubber in. thank goodness. perhaps pictures tomorrow
 
I just finished a windshield change out today. Very time consuming and fiddly but going slow is mandatory. Snapping/stripping fasteners will create big grief. I found that if you unfasten the top rail you can leave one lower corner attached to the lower frame cross member and just detach the other side. If your drilling screw heads might as well keep it to a minimum.Removing the one free pillar post leaves you with a two sided frame you slide the window out of.

I then had to remove the L- shaped bracket from the post to attend to the screw shank left over from my having drilled its head off to dismantle the windowframe. Shocked it with torch and water a couple times to extract the shank.

(Tip: Tap w/hammer on top of the screwdriver as you twist. Caution: Never drill the head off the two outermost screws on the topframe of the windshield. When reinstalling that top rail attach one side then you can suck in the last smidgen of alignment on the remaining side by first spinning in the inner most two screws into the metal backing strip and then inserting a pry rod or philips screw driver into the 3rd hole from center, when aligned spin in the 4th from center screw and remove rod/screwdriver. Inspect carefully for pinched wndow gasket at every stage.).

Soaped up the outer edges of window gasket and in she went! Ran a bead of soap in the channel that holds the body to winscreen gasket and zip that went in instantly.

This job best done on a relaxed afternoon with a beer on the deck and the game playing in the background .. or in the kitchen lol.
 
Better you than me my friend - the rubber around the glass was OK so I just replaced the seal between the window and the body but left the glass in the frame intact

BTW did I ask were you are located?

I did the same when I reinstalled the gasket on Bugsy my '68 earlier this year. Other folks talk of stretching and pulling and going to great lengths to get the gasket to fit and slide into the track without disassembling the windshield. I simply P-B Blasted, waited several days, screws came right out, slid the windshiled end pieces off, gasket in place and buttoned things back up. Just careful prep and careful removal of screws and all went well.

Have been past it a few times - kind of sad that you get to drive all summer long - that entire week :jester:
