TR2/3/3A Windshield Cracked

I installed a new windshield in my 1962 TR3B but after several weeks, it cracked in two places. I now have a new one but before I install, what did I do or not do that would cause this to crack?

Thanks for your help.

Mike

Back in the late 1960s I had a TR2. It came with a crack right down the middle of the screen. Fitted a new glass and several weeks later a friend getting in used the top of the screen as support as they got in managed to crack the new screen. Does not take much pressure in the center of the screen where it is unsupported.

Well hopefully your auto policy includes full glass coverage with no deductible (required in AZ, optional in some locales). Hagerty certainly covers glass 100% even if it is owner stupidity that breaks it :sour:

If it started at the top, then you need to check the tenax studs to see how far they pass through the frame. Most of the Repros sold are too long and will hit the glass. They should extend not farther than about 1/32" past the back of the frame. Unless your glass was somehow defective, which is highly unlikely, then the tenax studs are too long.

There is a center piece that can be installed that has a rubber pad; the big 3 sells them. The edge glazing piece that goes between the glass and the frame comes in different sizes. In the past, I have used black painters tape with the glass strip to hold it and put a lot of tape on by basically putting the glazing strip on the edge then go around and around the glass many times then put that whole mess in the frame then cut it out with a utility knife.

SP53,

Mine did not have so I ran over to Victoria British and picked one up. Now I have to figure out how the pad goes in. I think I know but will check again when I put on the windshield.

Thanks

Mike
