Windscreen wiper arm, what length

Can anyone tell me what length the wipers should be on a BJ7, i have some here that came with the car (not fixed) and they measure approx 300mm x 7mm flat bar but they seem to long. However they do actually fit the splined shaft which is better than the ones i bought from AH Spares, these do not even go on the shaft (260mm long x 5mm flat), are there two different sizes that fit different shafts ??

My BJ8

I've ordered arms from Moss and BV. Some are in AH Spares bags. Seems they do come in different lengths.

The flat shaft is 130 mm from where it clips into the blade end to the rivet end of the arm.
The length from where it clips into the blade end to the center of the splined shaft is 245.

The arm i have here from AH spares is approx the same length as yours, i was then looking on Holdens website and it seems there is a 32 & 40 spline shaft so perhaps i have the 32 spline and trying to fit in on a 40 spline wheelbox ?

Hi Rob,

I believe (others may chime in) that the stock wheelbox is 40.

I ordered a set of wheelboxes from BV and they had the wider splines, may have been the 32. I returned them and ended up cleaning and using my original thinner splines, 40? (Mine were not holding the arms on all the time).

The wiper arm from BV was 1/2" too long. (When the wiper blade was attached to the arm, it went past the windscreen and onto the chrome windscreen frame at the top.) I returned those arms too. The arms that fit, I got from Moss.

I think BV got these parts from AH Spares. Moss get's a lot their parts from AH Spares too. You never know what you're gonna get it seems.

If you have the thin splines on your wheelbox, order a set of arms from Moss. Maybe you'll get lucky and they fit, like mine do.

My wheelbox's are old and would not hold the arms on. It would fly off. I'd pull over, walk back and pick it up. That got old the second time. I ended up drilling and tapping for a small set screw in the bottom section of each wiper arm base. Problem solved.

Was it me who told my friends this car will never see rain? I love driving my car, I do get caught in the rain from time to time. At least there's one British part that's not going to fall (fly off) off my car!

Rock on!

Roger, I do not have my car handy but isn't there a clip at the base of the wiper arm that clips under the spline wheel? Or am I misunderstanding what you are discussing?

Yes there is a little spring clip that holds the arms on but i can't even get mine on let alone having them flying off !!

Yup, there's a clip and hence the root of my problem. The splined shaft is a bit rounded at the base and will not allow the clip to secure. (I tried filling the base flat, but that didn't seem to work.)

My solution works.

Rob, doesn't sound like your arm and shaft are mating. Count the splines on both pieces. That may explain.

I spoke to AH today and i think that i have the early model wheel boxes (40 spline) and the later model wiper arms (32 spline) hence they won't fit. They are going to send me the early type wiper arms for now to avoid replacing all the wiper mecanism, hopefully they will fit !

Bob, make sure you ask them to measure the arm length. The one from BV came from AH Spares. That arm was 1/2" too long.

Best of luck.
