Windscreen stay tension rod

ok, I still have to get time to go pull the fan belt to test my generator noise idea...but while I am at it, on my drive on Saturday, the stay tension rod for the windshield came out at the top, where it screws into the bottom of the rear view mirror.

I remember when I took everything apart to remove the windshield, back when I was prepping the car for painting, that rod was a pain, as the top of the rod looked a little 'boogered' and the hole on the bottom of the mirror looked a little 'wallered out' (you like my technical terms?).

I also remember that the bottom adjuster for the rod tension was frozen and all the PB blaster, soaking in oil, etc did not get it 'unfrozen'.

I tried to get the top part screwed back into the bottom part of the mirror, but it doesn't seem to want to stay.

Has anyone seen this before and can they offer a remedy? I need to figure out the size of the rod/thread/etc and the hole, so I can figure out if I can get in there and clean out the threads or a way to get them to hold, without permanently gluing/brazing/etc.

I went looking for a new rod w/base but apparently these are unobtainum.

I may have some of those lying around if you need one.I was wondering just what that rod is there for anyway.

If you have one, and are willing to part with it, PM me and tell me what you need for it...or what part you might need to trade for... maybe I happen to have it...

Thanks
Larry

You both may want to photograph the rods on your cars- there are several various types on the later cars

I had a similar issue with my mirror and rod. The mirror would not stay in place. Ended up cutting the rod so it only extended far enough for the mirror to mount on to, then held the mirror in place by sliding a clear furniture "bumper" between the windshield and the back of the mirror.

If you are going for an "original" stock look, this isn't your option since you lose the center divided look from the rod. Personally it looks cleaner to me and was a good option for a 2.00 fix.

Larry, I found a rod with good threads and the bottom attaching nipple. the chrome is bad but could be painted and you can have it for postage if you want it.

that would be great... let me PM you with info, so we can work this out.
Thanks
Larry
