Windscreen Capping - Sealer?

When I removed the chrome/aluminium (?) windscreen capping (by drilling out the rivets), underneath was some black gooey sealant of some sort.

Now I am ready to replace the capping and re-rivet it in. Clearly some sort of sealer is needed, otherwise the rain is going to get forced in between the capping and the frame and find its way inside the frame ... not good.

So, what should I use for this, and how should I apply it?

Thanks!

Thanks Jeff.

Would RTV silicone sealant also be suitable?

You will regret it. Never get the cap off again without taking all the paint with it. Use the rope. Seals well, and removable when need be. Silicon + Triumph = Bad
