Window Removal

Hi guys,

I'm getting my '74 Midget ready for some bodywork and new paint and started taking off all the exterior bits to minimize the amount of taping required. It appears the only way to remove the door handles is by removing the windows. Is this the case? I was able to remove the rear bolt (behind the handle button) but the front bolt is blocked by the glass.

So....is there a secret to getting the window out? Or is there another way around this?

Thanks!
Scott

IIRC, it requires removing the window.

It can be done but you have to drop the glass and track from it's mounts.
Removing the glass from the door is a royal pain unless you plan on replacing the inner fuzzy and outer wipe on the door. If you are not planning on replacing the wipes, just unbolt the wing window, winder mechanism, latch side track and center bracket bolts and let the whole thing drop into the door. You can now move it around some to get to that back handle nut.

I guess I didn't try that since I was going to replace the outer wiper and inner fuzz. Good to know.

Everything about them is a PITA. Like to know how it was all done at the factory in a timely manner. I made a special tool to help fitting the wiper and fuzzy seal. 1/8 X 3/4 strap with a sharp 3/16 bend at the bottom to help pull the clips into position. Taped the clips in place to keep from losing them to the bottom of the door.

Kurt.

Thanks guys!

I ended up removing the glass; I couldn't figure out how to reach the hole otherwise. I'm not looking forward to putting it all back together.

Now I'm debating if it's worth the hassle to do the other door...

When ever that outer seal is in decent shape, I'll tape it before I remove the window just because it's such a PITA to put back. Even with a home made J hook to help with the new clips, it's a 2 night job for each window if everything goes well. I just finished a 68 Midget, 1 side had to come out, the other side stayed.

How many of those clips are suppose to be in the bottom of the door and must it be equal on both doors for propper weight distribution? PITA is not really main term as I came up with many more terms and still have never replaced all the clips.

Mark

It seems easier when the doors are laying flat, but you'll need plenty of padding so that you don't scratch your paint.

I ended up doing the same on the other side. I figured it'd be a good idea to replace the weatherstripping beneath the vent window. And by the time that's removed, it's pretty well disassembled anyway.

I'm dreading the reassembly, but taking the door off sounds like a good idea.

What clips are you guys referring to? The ones that hold the weatherstripping?

yup - they are nasty! (I still have 3 or 4 somewhere in the bottom of the doors 'cept they don't rattle so I don't worry.

Removed the windshield on my '74 Saturday to start prepping for paint also. Have the doors and rear lights yet. Reading this thread I wonder if anything on this car is going to be simple.

I understand Menard's or Home Depot has has tools for working with siding that are very similar to those needed for those door seals, cost $3 or $4.

Actually, I think the mkII sprites have it right. Removable side screens AND a proper boot to put them in.
