Remember when JC Whitney used to sell wind-up keys for "foreign cars"? This shot was taken in Palm Springs in 1960 (credit Robert Doisneau). Note the factory fitting of the bonnet.

I seem to remember the first time I saw anything like that, it was on a VW bug.
 
I always thought that's how the rear engine models worked.
 
Expensive too. There are cheap ones out there but they don't rotate.
 
The JC Whitney ones just had a suction cup on the bottom.

The makers of the new (fancy, electrical) one discuss the various means of attachment. Magnets and suction cups don't work (well, at speed).
 
Still see them periodically on the new Beetle. That would be a fun little option to have, especially since the paint on Baby Blue's trunk lid is already faded.
