It certainly was not my intention to be out in the rain in my restored BJ7 but it happened!The wipers did a very poor to non existent job.It seemed as if they were being lifted off the screen by the air flow and ,due to sreen shape, do not touch over whole sweep anyway.Bending the wiper ,arm hoping to achieve more pressure,did not improve situation.Any suggestions?Thank you in advance.John M.
 
Is there an off chance that the bottom of the wiper blades is overlapping/touching the bottom windshielf frame when the wipers are in operation. (Blades too long)?

Are the wiper arms that hold the rubber, flexible so that they can follow the windshield contour?

Are the rubber blades themselves soft & flexible?

If the blades themselves are not parked on the glass instead of the frame, the rubber will take a wrong set & not fit against the glass when in use. I had to put a considerable bend in the main arms to get the blades completely on the glass & parallel to the lower frame when in the parked position.

There are all kinds of replacement parts over the years, not all will work together.

Sounds as if the springs in the arms are way too weak.

The next time you find youreself in a fix, try RainX. The stuff works miricles at any speed other than stop (and it works OK there too IMHO). Unlike replacement blades, almost any autoparts store (evel Walmart & Kmart) will have it. I know Andy Rooney of 60 Minutes fame hated RainX, but I don't think he followed the application instructions. I think it works better than wipers when freshly applied.
 
I JUST REPLACED MY RUBBER ON MY WIPERS, AND HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nopity.gifI THINK IT IS BECAUSE I USED A GENERIC REPLACEMENT BLADE ("....AFTER MEASURING LENGTH NEEDED, CUT OFF EXCESS AND THREAD INTO ORIGINAL WIPER HOLDER....") SEEMS SOME OF THESE THINGS ARE CHEAP AND INFLEXABLE. GOOD LUCK
 
I have a problem with my wiper motor--it usually keeps running even after I turn the switch off, sometimes for 10 seconds, sometimes for a minute or more. A guy who I met at Encounter a few years back was a Lucas factory repairman--he said that the wiper motor is directly connected to hot, that the wiper off-on switch operates to make or break the ground, and that there is also a grounding circuit in the self-parking section of the wiper that is supposed to disconnect after one wipe, but that mine is for some reason staying connected. Has anyone had this problem and if so how did you fix it?

If your wiper set-up is similar to TRs (and I think it is) this is correct and I would start by examining the condition of the wire that comes out of the motor an is soldered to a lug on top of the wiper gearhead. This is a flexible wire (probably red) that can develop insulation breaks and make ground contact causing the wiper to run. Insulation breaks usually occur right where the wire enters the motor body. If the wire looks okay then it may be time to peek under the cap of the gearhead and look at the parking unit which is a copper/brass(?) arm that contacts a plate with a gap in it. At this point it is a matter of studying the dingus to see how it works.

My apologies (and disregard) if the AH wiper motor is not similar to the TR.
 
John, Check your blade holder, it should be split with a pin at about the position where it fixes to the wiper arm, the pressure created by the wiper arm spring should keep the wiper blade on the glass and the spring effect of the blade holder should take care of the curves in the screen. It is possible that you have a rigid blade holders for a flat screen?

How did you put a "considerable bend" in the wiper arms? I would like to do the same so that they stow on the glass and not the seal but I don't see how I can bend against the arm's flat section.

I used a "micro" oxy - acetylene torch to heat the flat bend only & trial & error bend the flat curve to align the blades. I was concerned about discoloring the heated section but after buffing it came back to the same color as original. The torch is a Smith # 23-1012 with a small concentrated flame that is perfect for welding & heating small objects. Jewelers use them a lot.

It drives me nuts when something like the wiper blades don't line up perfectly where they should. Old Healeys are full of little misfitted parts problems that I can't leave alone.
