Spitfire Will 74 Spit clutch slave fit a 78?

I can't get the plunger out of my clutch master cylinder and I'm assuming the slave is in no better shape so it looks like I'm going to have to replace both of them. (The car has not been on the road in 11 years.) I found master and slave cylinders from a 74 on ebay and I'm wondering if they will fit my 78 Spit. The catalogs list different stock numbers for the slave for these cars. The 74 is listed as 7/8" alloy and the 78 is listed as 7/8" cast. I assume the 7/8" is the bore and doesn't describe the outside so I'm not sure whether they'll mount interchangably.
I's also appreciate any suggestions on sources for these items.
Thanks,
Jim

I'm relatively sure that those two types of slave cylinders would be interchangeable, especially as the bore is the same size. At very worst (and I doubt this would be the case), you might need to use the mount "sleeve" as well.

Have you tried compressed air to get the plunger out of the master? or something as simple as banging on a piece of wood with the open end down? So long as there's no scoring or pitting, those master cylinders in particular (usually the slaves as well) are very rebuildable. Meanwhile, are the eBay cylinders new or used?

They are identical aside from the material they are made from. I have even changed out my old iron one for a cast one when it was too badly worn to hone. Vicy Brit is where I got mine, the alloy one is listed as $59.95, and the iron one as $68.95. And yes thats the reason I went with the alloy one over the iron.

Since my first post I've removed the slave cylinder and it's it bad shape also. I've tried banging, oiling, honing and everything else I can think of to get the plunger out of the cylinders. The ones on ebay are used and rebuilt by the guy selling them. I see that Moss (or vic Brit, I forgot) has both for $139 and I think they're new. If the ebay thing doesn't work out I'll probably have to get the new ones.
