Wifi computer problem

Just got a real nice new toy, an ASUS ZENBOOK UX31E (ultrabook) real nice toy but for some reason, it will only identify one of my wireless routers. The other one seem to be invisible even though I am sitting next to it and according to my smartphone there is a good signal.

The only difference I can see is that one uses WPA and the other WPA2, but I don't see why that would make it impossible for the computer to see it.

Also, make sure the laptop is capable of receiving the protocol used by both routers. Some routers broadcast in 802.11b or g, some broadcast in 802.11n only (could be 2.4GHz or 5GHz) and some routers broadcast in 802.11n, B/G compatible. So, if your wireless card in your laptop is designed to only work with B or G, but one of your routers is broadcasting in "n", then your laptop will not see it. Not saying that is for sure your issue, but it's an easy thing to check.

I think that incompatible protocols is probably the problem, but both of my routers are only B/G compatible, and the laptop is n and everything else.

Is there some setting which restricts it to a minimum security profile? the "upstairs" router is only WPA capable while the "downstairs" router is WPA2.

Of course I could just buy a new router but I will still need the current "upstairs" router since it also runs our home phone.

Can I just plug a new router in to the current "upstairs" router and just use it for wireless? And if so, do I need to set it up in any special way (IP address etc)

Should be able to "plug-n-play" another router.

As for IP addressing, etc... that'd depend on your neighbors. :jester:

I just plugged my new router in, for some reason the old router doesn't let me comunicated directly with the new router, but I hooked up the laptop with a wire and configured the SSID and was able to connect immediately. Better yet, it now transfers seamlessly to the downstairs router which I couldn't get my work laptop to do. Now maybe the printer driver will work without to much hassle.

More importantly, the new laptop is really nice, Dual core Ivy Bridge cpu, 100MB SSD and a very nice screen and REALLY THIN! No fan, it barely seems to warm up and the instant on is great.
It is also kind of neat knowing that I had at least a small roll in manufacturing it.

And I figured out how to trick HPs printer driver into working!
Plug ethernet cable from printer directly into the computer without the router. Then it should find the printer, and take the address which was in the printer. Now plug printer back into router, and the computer probably won't find the printer again, but since it was already installed, it let me use the update function, put the same address back in and it worked.
