Why won't my Midget run with no gas?

Well, I found the limits to the Midget today. While the gas gauge showed a quarter tank left, the actual fuel was much different! Yep, I ran out of gas! Now with a 7 gal tank I usually expect to get about 140 miles out of it (yea, thats about 20 mpg) but I sputtered out at 138. Guess I'll have to start filling up around 100 miles to be sure.

After reading regularmans post, I think I'll take a look at my jets on the weber and see if I can't get some decent mpg's out of it. It is a 79 Midget with a 1500, stock four speed and weber conversion.

The wife had to bring me some gas, she sure got a kick out of that!

No worries, happened to me too. I had a full tank, and had spent a lot of time tuning the car in the garage. Gas gauge wasn't working, and I knew this. In my mind, I wasn't concerned as I had just filled the tank the last time I drove it, right? I took it for a spin finally after I got it decently tuned, and just stayed within 1 mile of my house.

Of course, I ran out of gas, and my wife wasn't home. Luckily my mother was, so I called her up and she brought over a gas can for me.

The very next day I spent some time to make sure the gas gauge worked

ive ran out enough times to carry a gallon
in the boot! or, maybe i could install my
wiper switch and get the gas gauge working...z

We ran out of gas in our Mini the first weekend we had it, with my wife on our way to an Earth, Wind and Fire concert! We were both enjoying the car, the day, etc. so much that stopping for gas somehow got overlooked!!

I calibrated my fuel gauge and sender together with the tank off and adding one gallon at a time. I now fill up at around 1/4 tank and It usually takes around 4 gallons. I made sure to give myself 1 gallon reserve. I made sure that the gauge did not rise off empty until I got one gallon in the tank, so I can have a six gallon range. I have not pushed it too far but so far it is working well. The next time someone buys a new spridget gas tank, send me the old one and I will use it to set up and cal spridget gauge sender units. I have done a few for people so far but I can only get the best guess type deal by measuring. I hope those are working out well for people. I was also shocked to see how far off the mark the brand new senders are on resistance. Let me know if I can help. Might be willing to do a few sender/gauge set ups this winter. Did the last ones for free, but this time I might need a little money to buy the proper set up equipment if I am going to keep doing it.
