Am I doomed to want oddball cars.

Mustangs for sale.... pass.

"vettes" a plenty.... next

"Oh look, a Camero!" .... yawn.

Why does this set me heart a scheming?
Renault Gordini

Sigh, it just ain't right, the boy's not normal in the head. :wall:

Virtually no rust, ran when stored... how can you beat that.

You are probably doomed, though. Best just to admit it and move one.

I once traded an R8 Gordini for a BSA lightning.... in boxes. Kinda sorry about that now. I love the "oddball" cars. When you drive down the road today, all the cars look the same, same 5 colors... It is so much more fun to really stand out.Saw a nice looking 2002 today, pale yellow... and a zillion other cars. Guess which one I can remember??

Trust me, with an unemployed wife, a Vauxhall in the garage and the Multipla at Mark's farm, if I brought this home I would be doomed. :nonono:

I hate to be the one to break it to ya, :thirsty:... you can skip the "probably" part.

agreed

I don't know why JP, but I seem to be afflicted with the same disease. The stranger the car, the more I like it.

I have found myself looking at the Renaults (my dad had an R10, said it was one of the best cars he ever owned, he also had a Dauphine, never said much about it....) and other oddball stuff, looking at "other makes" on e-bay and what not.

I am thinking something French or Italian from the 60s or 70s for the next car, still love British, but want to try someting different.

Count me as a Renault fan too.
My first new car was an '87 Renault Alliance (which the rest of the world knew as a Renault 9).
Built in Kenosha, Wisconsin, it was very light (2000 lbs), quite roomy and handled well.
For $4900 I got a 1.4 engine, 4 speed trans and no radio. All my kids learned to drive on this thing and it was a super-reliable servant for over 150,000 miles despite being thrashed with very little maintenance.
I would really like a Renault GTA.
I also had a Renault Daulphine when I was 16 and a good friend had a 4CV that I often drove. Both were unlicensed woods cars that we had good fun with as kids.

I'm not even a Renault fan, though I love the look of the 4CV - it's just that darn quirkiness thing, Renault, Citroen, DKW, NSU, DAF, early (early) Datsun, Toyota, Hino Contessa! (high on the list) and at the other end, 50's Lagonda, Austin 1800 Landcrab, Lada, Niva, I better go now.

A few years ago someone was selling a Renault Alliance racing team - four cars plus parts, maybe 4k if I recall. Sigh. So many cars, so little time, so little space, so little money.

:jester:

I'll admit that the deeper I get into this hobby, the more I appreciate the "common" classic. I can find parts for my MG and can learn to work on it myself. Were I to go American classic, I'd get a '66 Mustang V8 or a Jeep.

I'd rather drive than wrench, so quick and relatively cheep access to parts is nice. Or maybe I'm getting lazy in my "old" age.

I once owned an ~Autobianchi~. Seems like that should be on your list too.

I wonder if that race team was Bobby Archer's old cars? (below)
When my car was well worn, I considered converting it to an IT race car and got the Archer Renault catalog.
By that time, an old friend of mine was running an Alliance in SCCA ShowRoom Stock and doing quit well.
I ended up buying a fwd Mitsubishi/Dodge Colt which was already set up for IT racing and used that.

Also, I co-drove this Sports-Renault at the Summit Point Fall Night Four-Hour in 2010. It was rented, but the owner put my name on the car. We got 4th out of about 40 cars.

Oh yes!!! and Vespacar and Goggomobile and Lloyd and Borgward and (at the other end of the scale) International Travelall and the list goes on....

No, these were Alliance sedans.

Oh and I just remembered - Hillman Imp

And of course this: Bentley project and this International and of course this: International pickemup

There's an Autobianci in our neighborhood -
awaiting restoration.
I wouldn't mind having another Mazda R100,or
an RX2 or RX 3,but I can't afford them anymore.

I fixed the dead link above....see first photo.

Archer raced Alliances and Encores (both part of the R9 model). Also R5s (LeCar)

Might have been then, i don't really recall. BTW on retro rides there is a Brit in Arizona who bought (of all things) a Renault and is doing epic work troubleshootingthe onboard computer. He is manufacturin his own diagnostic circuits. For all i love oddball cars i would have poured gas in his by now.
