Why the Triumph Hatred?

Why is it that some MG people absolutly HATE Triumphs?
I understand the friendly rivalry, but some go to serious
hatred for the marque. Why is that?
I have a a GT,& a TR6.Am I supposed to hate myself?
I saw a TD in Reno,& yelled out "Nice Triumph!".The driver
gave me a VERY nasty look, obviously no sense of humour.

- Doug

For the same reason people hate MGs. Or Fords or Chevys, or Macs or PCs, or even cars in general. Just ain't their thing. I certainly can't understand being emotional about it though.

It could be that they blame Triump for the demise of the MG sports car in England and their rebirth in China as a sh**box. Ed

Never seen or experienced Triumph Hatred - fun rivalry sure but hatred? Can actually understand the nasty look (maybe) as we are all used to explaining that our cars are not kit cars or what MG is and so on. He may have been scowling because he thought you were <er> ignorant <> of what the car really was.

Everywhere in life there are people who can only find their happiness in others unhappiness, therefore if I am right, you must be wrong, if my car or house or career or whatever is better yours must be worse - terrible way to keep score.

That being said, LBC folk (in my experience) tend to not just appreciate each others cars, but, understand that a some level compared to much american iron, we are smaller, slower, are generally quirkier so we better stick together.

As an aside, was at a cruise nite on Saturday and there was a gorgeous 60's vette fastback - had a sticker said "this car eats Fords and sh*ts Dodges"- please! If you're old enough to drive and can afford this lovely car, don't ruin it...

my 2 cents

I've never seen that.

As JP says, "friendly rivalry" is common. But I've never seen all-out hate.

I don't hate Triumphs or even dislike them, but prefer MGs. Now hate might be a strong word, but lets just say I have a strong disliking for Harley riders, not so much their bikes, but just the Harley rider and his 12 friends with their loud mufflers, leather chaps and dew rags tied around their heads going up the twisty mountian pass in front of me going 20 MPH, I'm sorry you can't be a bad arse going 20 mph  Way too many people buy these big, heavy, loud slug-a-matics and don't have the first clue on how to ride a motorcycle. I raced dirt bike until I was 30, motocross, then later enduros and hare scrambles, so I can say I've been a motorcycle person, but the whole Harley hobby just looks silly and immature to me.

Ditto on the Harley riders, who seem to hate the dual-sport bike crowd. I almost got mugged by a Harley group at a fuel station last year (no kidding).

Most, if not all of the Triumph bashing is nothing more than good fun. I've never seen it get ugly, not even close. Lot of fun, actually! :yesnod:

If it has a motor and wheels, I'm there.

My very first LBC was a Triumph TR3A, and I am forever regretting its departure. My next one was a 1974 1/2 MGB, and that is still in my garage, bought over 22 years ago. I'm a bike guy, car guy, American or worldly, and just like the various races and cultures of the human species, it is all within the human being themself (proper?). Ford or Chevy, Dodge or Buick? I find that most of the Harley riders these days are Retired, doctors or Lawyers, Professional people who, if they go fast on those big M/C's scare the heck out of themselve's,

Me? I make my decisions, I ride Motocross at 50+ years (CZ's) and decided to pursue my LBC quest, had my share of muscle cars and still breath in Nitro Methane when the chance arrives. The fear of financial insecurity has left me, I'm just flat out financially insecure, but I have never seen a Hearse pulling a trailer.

We live in a very diverse world and life is to short to make it unruly, but some do choose to do so.

Triumph or MG, make of it what you will. Maybe we should start a 12 Step recovery program for LBC's?

Hi I'm Dave, and I'm a LBC addict, I'm addicted to the wind in my hair, the sun on my face, smiles from strangers who like to see sports cars with the top down, and (now these days here in California) a car that gets good fuel milage.

I love MGs! I really don't know why, There's just something about them that grabs me. Maybe it's the challenge of stopping the oil drips.(Grin). But then again, I've always thought I'd like to have a TR-6. My buddy bought one new and I always liked it. I'm not brand specific, I'd even take on an Alfa if it came along cheap enough, and I can't even speak Italian!

I do love Italian food!

Best part about the Hatfields and the McCoy type feud is that my older bro has a 72 B and I get to give him grief

I HATE General Misunderstandings. Had to work on too many of them rusty POS's.

The "hate TRiumph" bit may come from experience. All one has to do is see how many "how do I fix....?" threads on the MG forum as compared to the TRiumph forum.

They're ALL LBC's, they ALL take work to keep them going.

I recall, back in the late 50's and early 60's, you get some bloke driving a TC with Brooklands screens, a peaked cap, and tweed jacket, unless YOU are driving a TC or maybe a TD, think you could get a wave back from him?

Heck, you see it WITHIN the Marques.

Personally, I go to a car show, whatever it is, got a Bow Tie under the bonnet, I keep walking.

Ya only need a couple Italian phrases, Paul. I could teach ya those in about ten minutes. :smirk:

But I DO miss my grandma's home-made pasta.

You know I don't think I have really seen the Triumph hate either, we have a multi marque club with about 150 members, lots of Triumphs, MGs, bugeyes, etc. We don't really have any "haters" that I am aware of, but maybe if they were haters they wouldn't belong to a multi-marque club in the first place. But I do talk to people outside the club at various events and don't see Triumph hatred, and in the last five years I have gone from the Austin Healey to MG to Triumph tent with my ownership. The only person I can remember badmouthing a particular marque that I thought was pretty serious about it was a Morgan guy who I was talking to at the vintage races at Road America several years ago. We were talking about how his Morgan had a TR engine and tranny (I had a 4A at the time) so really not to hard to get parts for. I remember him telling me he couldn't stand "those MG twits" I just chuckled.

I went to a small show the other night and was the only furrin car their, even with that group had lots of nice conversations with the various Corvette, early Chevy, early Ford hot rod, stray Packard, etc. drivers.

As far as Harley guys, I have had a BRG TR4a and now a red TR250, they seem to feel a kinship to my car, so I tolerate them, and we don't have too many twisty mountain roads to get stuck behind them around here.

.

It's a false assumption to say that MG's are more reliable than Triumphs based on forum traffic.

Within the BCF, those two forums are apples and oranges as far as traffic goes. Much more MG traffic on the MG Experience forum than here. The Triumph forum here is actually one of the more active Triumph forums covering all models of Triumph.

Consider that a stick in the hornet's nest, so to speak. Just wanted to see if anybody was reading.

Doug:

We can start a 12 step recovery group for Panel Trucks and Vans.

Step 1: Admitted we were powerless over panel trucks and vans, and that our lives had become unmanagelable.

Howdy Folks,

I was just driving thru & had to add my $.02.

(1st) Who makes MGs? Who makes Triumphs? I love those sayings.
(2nd) "HATE"; I don`t think so! "ENVY" maybe!

I`ve owned everything from "TDs to MGBs"; Even had a Rubber Bumper MGB. "TR3s to TR6s" (No Rubber Bumper Ones). "Morgans to Cobras"; Even a few "Alfas" & Everything In-Between.

My biggest problem is "I like them All"!!

I need to win the Lottery so I can re-buy them all back!!

"NO HATRED" here towards any Car. "ENVY-YES"; I envy every "E-Type Rdstr" out there!!!!! Especially the "Series I".

Who would like to trade an "E-TYPE RDSTR" for a Body-Off, Nut & Bolt "TR3 Small Mouth" restoration well under way???????

Regards to All,

Russ

In terms of reliability of MGs vs Triumphs, lets remember the big picture - 80% of British Sports Cars built are still on the road - the rest managed to get a tow or get restarted.

All one big happy family...
Jaguar
Triumph
MGB
None of us hold a candle to a Morgan, so stop the bickering!
