Why Sandy has meteorologists scared

Here in northeast Connecticut the winds started gusting to 30mph about 2am. Misty showers since around 6pm last night. Gusts over 75mph expected from noon to midnight.

New York City has been "shut down" - no public transport since last night. We currently have the lowest barometric pressure ever reported north of Cape Hatteras.

Schools, businesses, etc. closed in much of southern New England. Expected storm surge of ten to eleven feet expected twice over the next 24 hours, near Long Island Sound. Surge is predicted to be much worse than the Hurricane of 1938.

Note - the northeast winds are pushing water into Long Island Sound from the east, toward NYC. This storm surge, combined with the astronomical (full moon) high tide, combined with the 20 foot hurricane waves, make the danger of flooding and water damage VERY high, even for those living a mile or two up river from the Sound.

Edit: many folks have home generators, but if phone, internet and cell service go down (like it did during last summer's hurricane), then communication becomes "difficult".

:grouphug: thinking about all of you in Sandy's path.

I'm not normally a nail-biter but this has me seriously considering it. :eeek:

Youse guys "up there" take all possible precaution. Stash enough water for drinking/cooking as you can, fuels for porta-stove, batteries for radio & lights, etc.

Much concern radiating from down here knowing you're not accustomed to this kind of event. H3II, NOBODY is.

Stay safe Tom...we have tied down what we think we need to both here and at the place in the Poconos. And we have emergency bags packed if we need to move, but we should be high enough unless our walnut trees land on the house. Until we lose power I will be working on sorting the rest of the photos from our recent trip to England to make a DVD to share with family

Just heard over 7600 flights cancelled. Also, the NY Stock Exchange shutting down for first time in over 30 years.

Starting to rain more and more. Barometer is 29.36 at 9:45 AM and going down pretty fast.
Fire engine just flew by our house with siren and lights at full-tilt. That's never a good sign.

I have a brother in Orange, Conn (near Yale). He is ready but it will be tough.

One of my brothers was flying out of Newark today (headed for White Sands, NM), but that's obviously canceled.
We have friends who were headed to Fla today. The soonest rescheduled flight date is next Saturday evening.

We have plenty of water, food and a generator (with lots of spare gas). I'm slightly worried about my basement but I think we'll be OK.
More concerned about one daughter with hubby and kids in a more flood prone area. But they have plenty of relatives and friends near them (I'm 100 miles from them or they'd be here).

My sister called last evening to tell me her apartment building (which is yards from the Long Island Sound) has had an evacuation notice... not mandatory, but suggested.
Hopefully everyone is prepared with food and water since we've known for a while that it was heading our way.
Right now its raining pretty good with occasional gusts; tonight is the time that things are to get worse.

Same here a/o noon. Tonight and into tomorrow will be the tough times, I suspect. Have a friend (& his 3 cats) from DE Bay here with us; his little community is totally evac'd. The food issue becomes interesting. If no power, and too much rain to use the grill, what do you stock up on. Canned goods to eat cold?

we have a gas and a charcoal grill plus my backpack stove from when I was a kid. A year or two ago we lost power for a couple of days and I pulled out my stove and we made spaghetti. I thought it was fun.... the wife not so much

We have a creek behind our house... took some pics this morning and tomorrow I'll take some more to note the rise.

Lived for ten days here without power last summer. Once the rain ended, grill did a lot of work. Toasted bread, heated soup, boiled water, etc.

Rule of thumb: have three days supply of food/water that doesn't need cooking. Think potatoes, veg, granola bars, soda, bottled water, etc.

And once the generator is cranking, back to (relatively) normal. Even a small home generator will usually run a microwave.

Tom,
Do you eat raw potatoes? That's hard-core if you do... Best of luck to you, and the others further south with Sandy.

Anyone home? I've been without power for the last 1.5 hours. Not complaining at all as I didn't expect it to come back on. I'm sure there are lots of people still without power so I'm glad to have it! It wouldn't surprise me if it doesn't go off again tonight as its pretty windy here.

Doc... you'll have to come up and help drink my CAB before it gets warm :yesnod:
