Why paint engine compartment black

I have a William as well (my 3-yr old). You got an Alex and a Ben too?

Tony--thanks. That's what I thought, but wanted an educated opinion.

Tony, thanks for the info on the back seat--Drew would love that!

Tony,
My '64 had a back seat bottom when I rescued it from the junkyard. You are only the second knowledgeable person to admit that it was offered as an option. Everyone else swears that it must have been added by a DPO. (The first was Frankie Monise of Monise Motors in Pasadena.)

A black engine bay in an MGB automatically reduces the asking price by half. Well, unless the outside is black too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Lonnie - we can all learn something about these little cars no matter how many or how long we've played with them....the rear compartment cushion (that's what it was called) was discontinued in 1969 as a factory option & became a dealer installed accessory after that....however, it had all the piping & everything else to make it look just lke the rest of the interior.

Probably one of the reasons I'll never be asked to be a judge at a car show...I know how the cars looked when they left the factory & also know most of the 'show queeens' are over restored! Were I judging, some of them would lose points to more original cars - even though they're drop dead gorgeous!

He's actually an Andrew as well. But he only hears that when he's in trouble.

Funny, I get the same treatment from my wife. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

when I was young and a DPO, the engine was out, I stood in there with a collection of spray bombs and painted it all black after I flooded it with degreaser. Was better than the dark green that didn't match the 81 VW blaze...

Don't laugh. I'm embarassed to admit the degreaser flood sounded like a good idea. I didn't do it, but only 'cause I was afraid the chemicals would ruin the matching e/b paint job. Cleaned it by hand, but not without a lot of grumbling and rattle-can fantasies.

Gesh, gunk works just fine and does not hurt a thing. Have used it for over 35 years on both my cars and boats. Boy do disel engins get dirty and nasty.

humm...over in the MG forum again shawn /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif

I see an MG in your future /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

I actually 'had' to drive an MGB today. Drove it to a custom upholstery shop from one of the local Brit car mechanics that I have a business affiliation with. Since I'm used to driving my TR6 with the top down, even in chilly temps, he didn't think I would mind. Top down for 8 miles on a sunny and windy 45 degree time of day. This B had increased compression, aluminum crossflow head, an "Outlaw" 38/38 downdraft Weber and a header with Peco exhaust. When I was asked what I thought of my ride in the B, I said I thought it could use more power and hopped back in my TR8. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

However... like I've said before. I wouldn't mind a MGB GT someday.

In the shop where my B has been languishing lo, these many weeks in need of a new windshield is a TR6 in need of an oil change. Its person drove it in, and gets to drive it right back out again. Not fair.

Pretty car, tho'.

BTW - While I was on active duty the first time ('72 to '81) I new two people who drove 60's model Cortinas. Nifty little cars, and from what I remember drop-dead simple to work on.
