Why is this car worth $10K?

Or, is it?

Here's what I'm referring to. It looks like an ordinary Mark 2 Sprite to me, but I confess that I'm not that familiar with the details of each version.

It looks OK from a distance in the camera shots. I notice no shots of area where rust pops up on these models. It has been repainted. I would be looking at it up close and personal before I laid that kind of money for it.
I've got a MKII but I don't see anything special. Apparently had disc brake conversion done since it has had pads renewed. That model had drum brakes originally like the Bugeye. It doesn't have door handles and has the detachable soft top. All the 948cc MkIIs have that. There are fewer of these than the Bugeyes made.
I am glad to know this car is so special. Maybe I can get more for mine. I hope he gets it for his.
By the way, I would much rather have your car than the one on ebay.

Mike

Well, if someone thinks it's worth that, than it is. Values are all so subjective. Were the car truly rust free and sorted then the price wouldn't be too bad -- considering the cost to get it to that point would be more than $10k. Were I the buyer, I'd need a serious inspection to verify everything.

As long as the buyer is happy, then it was well purchased.

Wow-----Ive got a bunch of stuff I want this guy to sell for me!!! Ive seen cars with under 20K that might be in that figure but none with a 100K!!

Kurt.

Not a bad price really if all is ok. Hay it is not perfect but....

I don't know if you've noticed, but everything on eBay is "rare"!

Seriously, rarity does affect value, but not by itself. It's rarity AND desirability that makes something valuable. And, yes, there are fewer of these than Bugeyes, but the production total for 948 Mk IIs is 3596 cars, and the other flavors of Sprites run around this number or even less. (According to "Sprites and Midgets" by Anders Clausager.)

As for price, of course it is set by what people are willing to pay, but not by what one person is willing to pay. The value is an approximate average of a lot of transactions, and by that standard, probably $4K-$5K seems reasonable from what I've seen. I was just wondering if there was something I missed.

Heh, the only thing you have missed is that it is all there, it is red, and I guess runs very nice.

Good toy, ready to go for 10K.

Overpriced IMHO. There are 2 very nice Bugeyes that have been for sale locally for some time at very little more than this. (Not my cars)

Maybe if it was a mkI Midget, but it is certainly overpriced for a mkII Sprite.

What I can't understand is why the reserve isn't met at $9800.
Well there are 5 more days I guess, he might get more!
Who knew the MK2 would do so well?

Call me cynical, but I'm always highly suspicious of ebay sellers and bidders with zero or very low feedback numbers. Some interesting wording going on in that auction to. Must have gone to realtor school.

Having said that, the leading bid has close to 300 feedback transactions, so who knows.

Me. Tonys Red one without the engine at LoR was the same but almost perfect. Think it was held for grandson, was complete except for fluids.

Howdy Folks,

I`d bet; This seller has a couple of buddies who have placed the 2 bids shown to keep the $$$ Up & Reserve not met. I`d bet the next bid meets the Reserve (If it happens)? I`m not that familiar with this marque but was`nt the "Engine Bay" Orig. painted Body Color? It was on my Bugeye.

Personally; I`d buy a "Bug/Frogeye" 1st. as they surely are appreciating much faster these days & have that "Classic" look.

Its always in the eyes of the beholder!!

Russ

yes some thing is only what some one else is willing to pay for it.
and just becase you sunk X amount in dosnt mean that some one else will value that.

im clearly in the camp of do what makes you happy and enjoy it.

There was something like 12,000 Sprites built in 1962 alone so there are quite a few 948 cc cars. Check www.mgcars/uk for production data.
I have seen a MkII with the 948cc last year which was what I would call a total restoration. The rebuilder told me he spent $23,000 on it. He got about $10,000 for it. Why? It just wasn't worth it. He had even had it on ebay but it wouldn't sell.
It have to be one awesome car for me to spend $10,000 right now.

Watch any recent auction show and you will see really nice classics going for half or less of what they did just a couple years ago.

Still, being the owner of a MK2 Sprite I'm watching to see if this one sells.

Think this though, if you did not know how to turn a wrench 10K is kind of cheep for a running old clasic.

MY Midget for sale You can have my Midget for alot less. I just saw this post. This car is located in the Poconos not far from me. I was considering contacting the seller just to see how it compares to mine.

Hi There CsW,

I used to live in "EFFORT", PA. Thats just a few miles directly South of Pocono Raceway off RT.115. Where in the Poconos do you live?

Your Midget looks pretty nice for someone who may be looking for one.

Best Wishes,

Russ

PS: The $10K Midget on ebay has not had another hit. I`d still bet the 2 bids are from his buddies but ???
