Thank goodness most folks are not this way, but ever notice how some guys will ask a question, you research it to make sure your answer is correct, answer the question and the person disappears from the face of the earth? Never gets back, no thanks, no acknowledgment, not zip! Oh well, such is life.

Boy is that ever frustrating. Seems to happen a LOT.

Or you ask for more details, and the original poster never answers the questions. Seems some people post just to get attention.

I seem to remember someone down on an island in the Caribbean ...

<argh>

Just the nature of the internet beast I think. It is bad form though, I agree.

I read recently someone’s idea of “good” email etiquette. I assume this author would apply the rules to forums also. The worst idea was the statement that if the only reason to respond to the email was to say thank you, don’t it is just spam. I assume the need to respond with a thank you would decrease as fewer and fewer people helped the arrogant SOB.

I have no problem replying with a thank you to the person you are thanking. But a pet peeve of mine (especially at work) is when someone hits "reply all" to say thank you to one person! Now THAT is bad email etiquette!

...along with top-posting when replying...

But I'm ~really~ Old School.

OK. For this nooby, what is "top-posting"? :confuse:

This is a "top post". The user puts his/her reply at the top of the post, and keeps the previous poster's text underneath.

Seems logical to me. But drives me nuts when someone keeps *ALL* the previous posts in the new message. Very easy to do with emails, where your email client puts all the previous messages automatically into your reply email.

On one forum I belong to, users post their replies via email, instead of posting on the forum itself. Their replies are often 100s of lines long, because all the previous messages on a topic are included. And sadly, their actual reply is often at the BOTTOM of the message!

Can you say ... DELETE?

I use bottom posting in forums because that's the way it's set up to work. I use top-posting when replying to emails, because that's the way that is set up and the person I'm replying to already knows what they said - why make them dig down through their original email to find your reply on the bottom?

I still like things in a semblance of chronological order, I guess.

...and with regard to the original topic, it IS sometimes disconcerting to post what one considers a well thought-out solution or suggestion to a poster's question and have no feedback as to outcome or status.

Most of the time though, the OP is a "blanket poster" newbie, hitting all the forums they can find. They just miss coming back to the one which would be of most significance.

Well, look at it this way: Your well-thought out answer may not be appreciated by the original guy with the question, but it probably will have helped untold numbers of people who search the net for the answer to the same question.

Case in point?

Still wondering ...

Basil's right! Well thought responses are great to run across, no matter what happened to the the original poster. We help when we can because we can. When asked why we were here, my 90 year old dad said that he figured we were placed here to help others through whatever this life is. So we help.

I subscribe to 3 or 4 techie mailing lists. On all but one, top posting is the norm. On the last one though you will get absolutely flamed if you top post. The internet is a strange and wonderful place. I truly appreciate all you guys here at BCF because it is such a friendly and tolerant place.

OK, guys, just another one to add to my lexicon.
