Why are gas prices going up again?

Come on give us a break! In the past 2 weeks gas has gone up 30 cents from $2.89 to $3.19. Why? No storms or problems giving them a reason to increase them lately or have I missed something? Every day I drive to work it's one price & at night when I drive home it's 5 cents more. Ridiculous!
 
I heard ( not gospel ) it's a combo of low US Govt. reserves + middle east tensions with Iran + starting the changeover to winter mix fuel additives = $OUCH.
$2.89 and climbing daily in Charleston, South Carolina area.
 
Well the fact that the dollar is worthless on the world market isn't helping...
 
Don't know, but I had to smile at the guy behind me this evening bemoaning the rising gas prices. While filling his enormous dually pickup truck. With the engine running. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/nopity.gif
 
Well the dollar is worth nothing, and it will likely drop even more. Oil is trading at $95.00 plus a barrel. I heard a news report that was predicting $4.00 plus a gallon "next year". I hope that does not mean Jan 1. I hope everyone will remember this as we vote next year. It is past time we had some leadership (Both parties here, I am not pointing specific fingers at all!!!) that is working to address the energy issue. Maybe a wholesale firing will let us end up some leaders that are awake enough to actually lead. We need an "Apollo" moment to dedicate research and resources to replacing oil once and for all. The Germans made truly synthetic oil and gasolene during WW2. Why can't we do that now???
 
Diesel or not (it wasn't, BTW), it's kind of silly to be complaining about how much it costs while you're wasting it.
 
I would not be surprised if its $4 dollar gas by Christmas and 5 dollar gas by summer. The oil companies know they got away with charging the same prices with the price of oil 30 bucks a barrel cheaper so they can now justify going much higher now with the cost of oil so high. [tinfoil hat]$6 dollar gas when suddenly all the refineries need maintenance all at the same time [/tinfoil hat]
 
Can`t answer this one without getting into the political realm! Other than that, consider the Saudis {And other O.P.E.C. countrys} pay less than a buck a gallon! While other European nations are paying well over $5.00. Why should we be any different? {sarcasm}
 
In Canada today, the price is 97.9 cents a litre. It has been this high and higher for the last 10 to 12 months. Translated into American gallons, that is approx. $3.75 per. Because a Canadian gallon is bigger,it costs approx. $4.25 per. Our gas has always cost considerably more than yours. At least since I started driving in 1966.
And, BTW, we get off very cheaply compared to my Uncle in England.

Immediate thoughts (in no particular order):

That there hasn't been a press to develop a transfer mechanism for hydrogen is a pet peeve.

The need to develop an efficient and alternative answer to fossil fuels has (or should have) been obvious to us since the early '60's. Liquid propane powers vehicles now, WHERE"S MY HYDROGEN?!?!? Nevermind "fuel cell" conversion to electric motors and all that jazz.

Dollar value is secondary. Over 80% of our actual currency is held by folks OVERSEAS.

The bovine excretia will continue as long as we consume ever more of the dwindling supply of dinosaur poop. The Nazi's used methane as substitute, BTW. Not too efficient, but relatively abundant.

What th' frell are GM and Ford doing building "Escalade" and "Navigator" vehicles?!?! Shouldn't they be building a thing they'd call a "Gnat", "Hummingbird" or "Weevil" (I left out "Shrew" & "Titmouse"... ~giggle-snort!~).

We're ~collective~ idiots. sheesh. Most of us who've never owned a vehicle with over five cylinders are gonna be pune-ished for the V8/V10/V12. feh.

Maybe when we vote we need to vote for the candidate with the LEAST amount of campain money just as a wake up call to these so called lobbyists.

Speculators buying up oil futures are a BIG factor in the price of a barrel of oil!
I used to think the price of oil had to do with O.P.E.C. greed and i`m reasonably sure some of it does.
But more and moreso I`m thinking it has a great deal to do with the greed here at home. {America}
I`m with DrEntropy here on the alternative fuels. Fossil fuel is killing us {in more ways than one}. Why hasn`t hydrogen been bieng developed sence the 60`s or even earlier? ...... see question #1 above.
What has been touted as alternative fuel is nothing more than a mere smoke screen to make us think an effort is bieng made.

The latest uptick in gas prices is courtesy of floor traders in New York, as mentioned above.

I've moved to more fuel efficient vehicles recently, but not necessarily to save fuel. I just like driving them.

My "main" car is a MINI, averages 31.7MPG on the trip computer. It's driven 95% on Interstate, thus the high mileage.

My commuter, drive to work vehicle is a 650 Kawasaki. Get's 50MPG. So, my average fuel economy is 41MPG.

Won't meet the 2010 fuel requirements, though.
 
Among other things, The Chinese are using it all and don't care about the price. Why not, all the businesses are moving there. Nickel an hour wages.
 
HEY!!! Don't pick on my V12 now , ya hear. First, I hardly ever drive it anymore. Second, after some "tweaking" that only a pro mechanic could put up with,(Re curved distributor, advanced timing, adjusted ecu, synthetic oil...) 26MPG at a cruise in the 80s. It will do it all day long.Even my old Audi does 20 or so in town, and 32 highway. Not bad for a 20 year old.
