Hey all,
I saw this picture on the forum on an item related to tires. what I liked about the BE, other than the great condition, was the outside mirrors. No holes to drill! No worry about putting the mirros in the wrong spot after drilling through the new paint and s/m. Who owns this one? Has any one else done this? Can you fit and open the door with sidecurtains on it? What type of mirror was fitted? Any other ideas? what about the hot rod mirrors attached to the A pillar? Has anyone done this. thanks for your help? Scott New/old BE in assembly.

I think they may be Harley Davidson mirrors, apparently they have the same threads as the windscreen pillar mount nuts.
Graham.

Unfortunately, they will interfere with the sidescreens when opening the door. However, if you rarely use sidescreens then it would be no big deal.

I expect Jack will be along shortly - he has this setup

Maybe a dumb question, Jack (the truly dumb question is the one that isn't asked!! ) but if the mirror was mounted in the front hole, would that make side-curtain install easier?

The threads are not correct for the captured nut (metric on the mirror).

Yea it would work fine, but the front hole has a captured nut inside the A post. Would take some cuting to sort it out. The back hole is just like a bolt and a nut.

Having seen these mirrors posted in the past, I went to the local Harley dealer yesterday and bought one. It looks great. The dealer said they are popular and are kept in stock. I hope to install it soon.

Don't know if I'd want to use the front hole - doesn't it pretty much take the pressure of the windshield frame?

Ah ha! I was forgetting the front hole has a captured nut!! Re-thread the mirror post?

That miror mounting stem is much stronger than anything that came from the factory.

Coastalman,
What size thread is the stem? could the stem be retreaded and threaded into the front hole of the windshield mount. It would miss the side curtain, but would it now hit a front opening bonnet? Never an easy solution!

If it was in the front hole it would clear all. I am sure it could be done but I am not able to do that kind of work not that I would not like to though.

Might want to check if you can see the mirror in the front hole when you are sitting in the driver's seat, it could be behind the post and be unusable.
Bill

So again here is another opportunity for someone to make a simple product. A threaded "plinth" to go in the front hole of the windscreen that would accept some sort of aftermarket mirror similar to the Harley unit.

I put these mirrors on my Midget. I think Bill's right, mirror might be hiding behind the windshield pillar if in the front hole. They work fine as I put them on, side curtains too but I hardly ever have those on.
Here's a thread on it.

You can see mine here.
I still like the fender mounted mirrors though and will probably go that route soon.

Front hole is fine.

Here's a picture.

For what it is worth. I tried the mirror in the front captured nut of the windshield. It worked fine. I then double checked the screw that came out of the forward hole and the Harley mirror nut worked fine with the BE screw. It appears to me the threads are similar.
