Whiz Kid...

Just about the time global warming is suppose to happen. I guess if the asteroid does hit the earth in 2036, then the dust cloud will cause global cooling. Way to many things to worry about.

I was watching one of the programs about what happened to the dinasours. Well ... as it tuns out paleontologists think that volcanoes emitted copious amounts of Co2 and So2 into the atmosphere causing {thier words not mine} "Global Winter" which accordintg to them, wiped out all but a very few mamals on earth. And all along I thought that Co2 and So2 caused global warming according to what we have been told by scientists. Now I wonder which it is that Co2 and So2 actually do, warm us or freeze us.
It seems you can have it either way! According to what fits your theory.
In any case by 2036, I`ll be 98 years old. If I live to see an asteroid hit the earth I`ll consider myself one lucky man!

Mickey, Tried to read it but it says that the page has expired??

I'll go unpack that suitcase now...

I like when kids think about stuff like this. But it's too bad that the rumour-mongers on the internet spoil it. Even if the kid is wrong (which he apparently was) I admire his efforts. I may get to meet Dr. Michael Griffin, Chief Administrator of NASA on Friday. If I get a chance, I'll ask him about it. (Rodney Frelinghuysen, our local congressman is setting up a meeting with Griffin and a group of us from Morris County).

Completely Apples and Oranges. The theory you are referring to is principally caused by particulate ash from volcanoes that was accompanied by those gases. It's hard to imagine they skipped that little fact on the show. I understand that folks have different opinions on this subject, but the effect of particulates are a key part of the theory in this case and has a huge affect on the results.

My childern and grandchildren would have a different view of that matter.

I dunno. I mean if you are outside of the immediate strike zone, then all the particulates that it throws up will have a net cooling effect.

It might quieten some of the hysteria over "global warming". If you look at it in that light, it could be beneficial.

It's an ill wind and all that...

It could be beneficial...as beneficial as it was to the survival of the dinosaurs!!!! Such concern over events that we are powerless to affect strikes me as just so counter-productive, when there are so many issues facing humanity today that we DO have the means to correct or prevent!

Wasn't that the event that allowed mammals to attain the top of the evolutionary tree?

I'd argue that was beneficial. Getting chased by a T-Rex is not my idea of a good night out...

Yes, but this time, we would be the dinosaurs!! :eeek:

Perhaps insects would be the next to climb the evolutionary branches on that tree!!
