While I'm asking "rear" questions. I've got a "wah wah" sound in the rear. I've been told its a wheel bearing. Are there any special tools needed for this. After referring to the shop manual, they show a picture of a hub removal tool. Is that necessary to access the inner workings?
 
Yes, the right puller is necessary if you want to preserve the hub. "Generic" two- or three-legged wheel or hub pullers can bend that hub; the original type puller fastens firmly down on the flange to prevent that.

Unfortunately, if you're hearing noises, chances are you'll be looking for a new axle shaft as well as bearings. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
I second Andy's comments - from experience when I had a 74 Spit. Used a two legged puller and bent the hub. Thought I learned something, so I pulled the other axle, took it to a mechanic who put it on a press, and he bent the other hub. Moral is: don't force it, use the right equipment, and hopefully find someone with experience and proper tools to help you if you can.

In the end, I did get it done, so I'm sure you will be able to also.

Hub pullers for Spit/GT6/Herald are pretty easily available (wish I could say the same for TR2-6 hub pullers!). The site below has about the best price I've found, and a nice picture of the tool you need. Here in the U.S., you might check with https://www.britishtool.com/ I don't know if he has the Spit/GT6/Herald puller. I was asking him about the TR2-6 puller a while ago, but he wasn't yet making one. He also rents the tools, which is a great option for a job like this that needs doing once every 25 years or so.
