Which type of sand/glass etc... to use for underca

I am going to start on the bottom of the car The metal work is all done already but on the dottom of the car there is some light just surface rust from sitting around. This is on a 61 Bugeye

There are a ton of different types of sand/glass etc... which would be the best on the undercarriage. There is no major rust just light.

I would reccomend soda blasting. Harbor freight sells a decent soda blaster setup for $100. I'm gettin one soon. they also sell 50 lb bags of soda for around $30.
Do not use sand. especially without a resperator. the silica in it will damage your lungs. not to mention its very harsh, generates a lot of heat, and can distort sheet-mteal.

Aluminum oxide is a very good abrasive for rust removal. Soda does NOT remove rust. There is lots of info on the web. I don't know if it's on the web but Eastwood has a table that lists several abrasives with recommendations for their use in their printed catalog.

This is what they say about soda: "The soda media will remove urethane, epoxies, enamels and lacquer top coats along with virtually every primer for automotive and marine use. Use soda to strip coatings from fiberglass from auto and boats and even blast and prep wheels for paint without dismounting the tire! Note: Soda alone will not remove rust. You will need to use our abrasive medias for heavy rust removal. Use our #50494 for a blend of soda and aluminum oxide for rust and corrosion removal."

Harbor Freight sells abrasive blasters for soda and other media. They also sell the media. Their prices are excellent and product quality not too bad.

Banjo is correct about sand and distortion, but you should always wear a respirator, plus skin and eye protection with any abrasive media blaster. The process creates a lot of dust and also puts the material you are removing, rust, dirt and old paint in the air and you don't want to breath any of it.

Do you think the soda blast would work on plastics for my motorcycle?? Just the inside not the part that goes towards the outside i did that by hand just dont want to do the insides anymore.

I have to agree with Colin8 Soda will not touch any rust . You want to use a media or a oxide. I use a #30 mesh silica media Anywhere that sells lumber should cary bags of abrasives. On your Bugeye use alot of caution since the metal is very thin.Take your time or you will distort the metal.
