Doug, I don't have any suggestions for you, but since you mention "hillclimb", I have a question. Way back in 1976, the Austin Healey Club held its West Coast Meet in Eureka. It took place on Labor Day Weekend and one of the events I attended that weekend was a hillclimb. Seems like it was the "Emperor Norton?" hillclimb, or something along those lines. Does this event still take place?. It is the only hillclimb I have seen or heard of here in California in all those years.

I can't see how you'd go wrong with a Miata. Plenty of them out there, cheap and reliable. Loads of aftermarket performance parts and I'm sure you'll have plenty of competition.
