Where to Move?

My Wife (of 31+ years),& I have lived here all of
our lives. We could probably sell our house (bought in'79),
& have about $110,000 clear, after paying off everything.
The question is,where to move?Lots of things to consider,
I'd like to find a place that I could pay cash for, build a
shop,& (hopefully) not have any bills. Also consider moving
expenses. And there's always taxes to consider.
My Wife's job has changed - she might end up taking a
pay cut.
Does this place exist?

Doug,
You want to find a more rural area with low housing prices. Depending on climate, and part of the country, there are probably a number of places that would meet your needs. Do you have a region you want to be in? North Central PA might fit depending on what you are looking for.

it is just over the next hill...

Howdy Doug,

I moved down to the "Up-State, SC" (NW SC) area approx. 4mo. ago & Wish I had done it 4yrs. ago; From NE PA.

Yourself coming out of CA. I have to believe you like a "Warmer" climate. So far Its been about the Mid 60s here (Really Nice). Of course the summers got hot but where don`t the summers get hot! The humidity factor here is considerably lower, Than say along the coast. We love it. The "Mountain Back Roads" are truly designed for an LBC (That just comes with the area).

The housing cost is quite reasonable especially in todays market. The property taxes are incredibly low (Compared to PA anyway). Gas prices are lower (Compared to PA). The food costs seem to be about the same.

What I did was; Lease a home for a yr. This way; You really have some time to look over a given area closely & then decide exactly where you would prefer to live.

Have Fun Shopping,

Russ

The one place I would NOT advise is New Jersey.

I love it here because my family is close by and there's is always lots to do. Also, since we own two residences here, we're OK in terms of real estate values. But for someone coming in from another state, it can be a challenge.

We've been looking at real estate recently.
The town I work in has mostly residential homes on one acre lots.
Despite the dip in prices, it's still hard to find a 4 bedroom house on an acre for under $650,000. Average yearly real estate tax is about $15,000 for homes in that range.

On the other hand, our gas is cheap and they put it in for you. :jester:

Doug,

Almost three years ago, following retirement, my wife and I moved from Sacramento to northern Alabama and we both have agreed several times that we should have done this years ago. We found a place out in the country with six acres with about half in pine forest and our place is surrounded on three sides by that pine forest. We have seven MGs and there are some really great back roads to use them on to say nothing of the good weather, almost year round driving season. We signed the "Homestead" act and therefore we pay no property taxes. Energy costs and food prices don't vary much across the US but your real estate dollar goes alot further here. There are also a lot of LBC activities regionally, We do five regional shows a year and belong to two clubs.

Hope this helps. If you'd like anymore info, please don't hesitate to sak.

Cheers - Dennis

Doug;
I have driven through Eureka/ Arcata
It's a real nice place, nice town square.
My son looked at the college there.

But, If you are looking for more sun... Look into the Southwest.

NO ..........Utpoia does not exist.
Its all give and take. Theres tons of great places to live in our country none are perfect all are different all better than most all other places in the world belive me I have seen a bunch and this is as close to utopia as your going to get no matter where you call home.

It's to hot or its to cold winters to long summers to short.
Life has its seasons too.
So what you want now may not be what you want later..

.....Well I hate to even suggest this, but paridise does exist, and it is here in the Sacramento mts of South central NM. Check out the Ruidoso area.

north Alabama....just goggle "Huntsville,AL" & see what you find out....then, we'll see you in the Spring!

If you want low crime, a slower pace and LOTS less traffic..... There is North Dakota.......

BUT ... It may sound good, until you spend a winter here......... :cowboy:

Doug, you've been spoiled by the Northern California lifestyle. I don't think you'll be happy anywhere else! Southwest is too hot, southeast is too humid, northeast is too cold, northwest is too wet. You're already in the right place as far as weather, driving roads and car culture. You could get more car culture and even better weather by moving a bit south, but with that luxury comes more crowds. If I was forced to move somewhere other than where I am, it would probably be Central CA, slightly inland.

bravo.... as long as you don't need to catch a cheap flight out of town, you are in a nice area.
But hey, I like where I am in the southwest, 4 seasons and it does
not get over 100........ much. lol

....It doesnt get over 90 here at 6-7K feet, it got much hotter in the summer in the Bay Area where I lived for 25 years. Everyone thinks NM is desert, but that is good, it keeps them away!

I was at HSU in the late '80's and would love to go back. Redwoods, white water rafting in the summer, and back country skiing in the winter. I loved that place. Why would you leave Eureka? Oh... no jobs.

Good luck!

Things keep getting more expensive,+ my Wife's job
situation possibly changing,we're considering the options.
Plus the idea of paying off all of our bills & having low,
or no house payments is enticing.
The down side is getting rid of a lot of stuff,and/-
or how to transport all of those cars!(Right Jack?).
It will take some time if we actually do this.Plus
our three kids are in Mass.,Tenn.,& Virginia.

- Doug

Doug- Similar problem here.My kids don't know we might relocate soon and are asking what we will do when they go to school on the east coast.

My usual answer."Change the phone # to unlisted"

Well.... If your kids stay where they went to school,
I bet I know what part of the country you might end up in.

Isn't one son already in the Chattanooga, TN area?
