It all started this afternoon when we met our daughter and 2 grandsons at the pediatrician's office. Apparently her CRV had a flat this morning and the spare was kinda low too. You know what that means. Just another chore for good old dad. No big deal right? Now, mind you, I'm not complaining, but this was a bit more complicated than I thought it would be. BUT, have you tried to find a real gas station lately. Gas, no problem. $2.09/gal please. Washer fluid . Yes. $2.99 please. Oil, yes. $1.79.qt. thank you very much. Deli, hot dogs, bread, milk and other assorted crap including baby diapers and condoms. Air pump??? What?? Oh, yeah. We had one of those things. You know, you put 25 cents in and it runs for about a minute. Sorry, but it broke and then someone stole the hose, so we had it removed. Try across the street at the Jiffy Mart. Ask for Apu. Do you want fries with that chili dog???
After I repeated this exercise at 3 more "gas stations", I finally decided to drive my daughter's car home and use my own compressor and my own air. God bless Harbor Freight

I work next door to a "service station". These guys will pump the gas, check the oil and wash the windshield. They have a couple of service bays and can actually fix cars. As far as I know, it is the only one in Northern Colorado.
 
That's why all my vehicles have a can of Fix-A-Flat in the trunk. Yeah, I know, the stuff is a horrible mess, but sure can get you out of a bind. I would only use it as a total last resort, like a flat in the middle of the 9th ward in New Orleans after dark.

About 5 years ahead of ya, bud. Have had a concealed weapons permit since 2001. I think it covers scissors as well.

BTW, service stations have all gone to the land of soda fountains, family owned drug stores, Woolworth's lunch counters, big department stores with elevator operators and nice clerks who actually waited on you, all day movies for 50 cents, etc, etc.

Sigh......they really were the good old days, but we weren't smart enough to realize it then.
 
Yeah, one of the cool things about getting back to driving a TR after 10 years off is keeping a list of "friendly" gas stations. In metro DC, certain Ex*** stations that have full service and real live mechanics in the garage still have free air as a service.

There is one gas station in my area that still has free air....and the pump actually works properly! All the others(including Esso/Exxon - who I work for) make you pay to use a pump that doesn't even work right. And whenever I am at the good pump someone always mentions how that is the only working pump in the area.

At the ripe old age of 53, I have nothing but fond memories of service stations with their occasionally cantankerous but usually very resourceful and capable mechanics.

Yeah, literally NOTHING but those memories, sadly.

The guys at the one my family usually went to always cursed them 'furrin' cars and how hard it was to work on them (probably in jest to some degree, since the entire front of a Herald flips up...although some things like the fuel pump and starter are a bit awkward to get to regardless), but they always got the car fixed right, on time and cheap. Those WERE the days....
 
In my little corner of Wisconsin, population 2000, there are at least four places to pump up a tire. About 15 miles away there is still a station where when you pull in, the bell rings and the owner comes out and pumps 2.29 a gal, gas.
 
Nothing is really " free" anymore. Heck someday we may have to pay $1 for a bottle of water - WOOPS - that day has already come. Next will be the air we breathe!

How is it that a Lesser grade of Petrol ((Diesel)) is 20% more expensive that regular gasoline?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif
 
You know good old USA usually have "next years" cars available in September (and even late August). The new requirements for diesel in the 2007's is 15 parts per million of sulfur where the "low sulfur" labeled diesel is 500 parts/mil. If it is more than 15/mil there should/is a sign stating it is a FEDERERAL OFFINSE to use it in a 2007 OR LATER model.

I bet that is one of the reasons diesel is hanging up a bit in price.
 
It may be a little out of your way but every petrol station in Scotland has an air pump. I will even lend you the 20p coin you will require. All is not perfect here though as petrol is more than $7 a gallon!
 
in my little hometown (1600 people) we had an Amoco station that was full service (a rare thing, even in podunk Indiana). Pump your gas, check your oil, and wash your windshield. ....it went out of business last year :-(

if you're ever in Lafayette, Indiana, there is a restored 50's style gas station....right downtown. a pretty cool sight!
