Where does this wire go ?

Hi all

After some engine rebuilding/cleaning I found a loose wire above the alternator. It comes from a small metal part ( Looks like a small diode) attached to the alternator mounting brackett, approx 1/4" diameter x 1" long. The wire is about 8" long ( Black in colour ) What is the part and where does the wire connect to ??
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated

That sounds like a Radio Frequency Interference filter. It would hook between the output of the alternator and ground. You probably don't need it (unless you have a CB in the car), so I would try running without it and see if there is any problem with noise in your radio (if you have one).
Cheers,
