Where do I find?

I just bought a '63 Austin Healy Sprite. Where do I find the vehicle identification number. Other than want is on the plate attached to the frame. Florida is giving me a rough time Title vehicle # has to be verified. Thanks for any help. I'm a new member.

What are the numbers? Some DMV workers are confused by the short VIN number. I think the chasis number you want is on the sloping part of the frame rail below the air cleaner (on a tag). There is also a body number tag inside the door. The number you want should be like HAN7-26622

Thank you. That number doesn't match the title number. It is registered in Arizona and the only number that car has had starts with ABL.... I'm kinda of at a loss where to look next.

I'm confused. What is the number on the title? Is it a replacement title?

There is a number plate mounted on the top of the wheel well below the air cleaners. This should be the HAN7-XXXXX number Trevor refered to.

Thank you for your help. The plate isn't very readable, but I can sort of make it out. I don't know how Arizona came up with ABL.... number for the title. Ihope they can figure it out. Thanks again.

One other, er, solution would be to purchase a new vehicle ID plate form Moss or VB and have the Arizona number inscribed on to it. Not quite kosher, but, possibly the easiest.

The second approach is to identify the number that is on the car and petition Arizona for a correction to the title. When I purchsed my Healey, someone "dumb thumbed" the HBJ8l into BJB1. It only took the state of Fla. about 90 days to fix this snafoo after I pencil traced the vin plate and made the formal request. Hopefully, Arizona is as good as Fla at fixing problems.

BMC also stamped a chassis number under one of the front shocks. I can't recall which side (anyone else recall?). Kind of a pain in the neck to get to, but it's there.

Sometimes if a car has been retitled in the past, this chassis number is used, since the VIN tags under the carbs get pretty beat up, or may be missing.

The stamp is on the passanger sideshock mount. if you are looking at it from the front of the car. it toward the firewall.

found mine by acc while cleaning the car for paint

Yup, the right front shock mount should have the number stamped in it.
I have one car in California, that was missing the aluminum tag, and somewhere in its life was assigned a number by the Ca. DMV. It has a separate tag with the Ca. number attached.
When I lived in Az., they were always pretty accommodating about such things, but that's been a few years ago.
