My TR4 has been acting funky, so I thought Id better ask now. I usually dont travel too far but where would I attach a tow line on my TR4 for an emergency tow home? Thanks. Also where do you guys place your jack stands for best support when working under your car?

Re: Where do I attach a tow line for emergency tow

For the jackstands I always use the frame... in front usually even with the front wheels, in the rear also even with the wheels, don't like having the stand on that sloped section.

It would be better to get the stands undet the axle (so the suspension doesn't sag) but that's near impossible with the exhaust system position.

I have never towed using a rope and would be wary of going far like that. I suppose you can pick up from the frame around either front wheel... can't see a way to get a hold of that cross bit to pull from the middle which would be best. Use a loooong rope.

AAA-Plus is pretty good for piece of mind -- will tow you up to 100 miles (request a flatbed of course).

You might check your local traffic laws about towing.

Some states have requirements about how long the rope may be, how it should be marked for visibility; and it might even be illegal except for emergenices where you go further than just off the road or out of traffic....

Towong with a rope. Brings back fond memories of high school in the '70's. One rope break in particular sticks to my mind, we almost killed the neighbors dog from the whip action of the broken rope.

Even though I have done it a lot of times, I would say get a flat bed and save your nice car. A richochet from a stretched nylon rope can do wonders to your front grill or body work.

True, I would never use a rope. I do carry a tow-strap, much stronger, little stretch, very secure hooks on each end. Even with that I would only tow or be towed just far enough to get out of trouble or perhaps to start the car.

Why would anyone ever find it necessary to tow one of our fine, reliable, British automobiles in the first place? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif
It's been a long time, ('73 or so,) since I owned a TR4, but I seem to remember eyes being either welded or bolted to the frame on all four corners. But, mine was an IRS car, and had also been shipped to Arizona from Taiwan, so they may have been added as shipping tie-downs.

Only 'four eyes' on mine is the driver.

Seen on a local tow truck: "We don't want an arm and a leg, we just want your tow".
