Where can I get 1000 or 2000 frit sandpaper?

I am going ot polish the engine..did a lot of reading and after trying Mothers polish and getting some good results, I want to make her really shine so I going to try:

2000 or 1000 grit polish, then 800, 500, 200, etc. in reverse order of course. I tried 120 grit and even on a Dremel on low it's not smooth enough. Once all the old grit and grime is off and it's smooth I will polish it and make her "purdy".

Can I get this at Home CHepot??
 
Go to an auto body supply store.

pretty much everything..the tubes for starters and then all of the casing itself.
 
Standard industrial-supply places like McMaster-Carr, Grizzly Industrial, Enco, or MSC Industrial Supply will have all grades, probably cheapest, too.
 
Or you can even try a local body shop, but it may be more expensive :wink:

If you're doing lots of this, you'd probably be better with a bench grinder and a selection of wheels; flapper, steel wire, brass wire, soft & hard polishing wheels. Much easier than trying to get a decent finish by hand.
 
cripes! more tools to buy?? thank God I am divorced!!! I just polished the tube that goes from to the carb and the valve cover...it came out veyr nice silver even though apparently I just found out after beginning ot clean it by sanding that it was coated in a goldish type color. *sigh*..does this have any real impact on performance or do I just get a "hey that's not the original color you MO-ron!" from viewers..?
 
ahh figured that woudl be the case. I polished it with NeverDUll..does that count?? for my battery terminals I have the opposite..they were silver and are noe goldish!

I would think about applying a clear coat once you get it all looking "clean & shiney". :cooler:
OTHERWISE you'll be starting all over again once things start to "dullify". :wall:

Of course, a clear that is heat resistant and anti-yellowing would be advised.....
