When you rebuild your car double check everything

I have a friend rebuilding a TR6 from parts and a shell. He's spent a ton of cash, put in a lot of hours, and it's starting to come together now.

He's been at this thing for the last 5 months - I helped him put the engine/box in a couple of weeks ago, and I figure he's got a couple more months before it fires up and goes down the road.

I got a call this week - he forgot the dowels for the pressure plate. Just spent the afternoon pulling the box to fit them.

That's a mean job for something so stupid. I wish he'd read the manual before bolting the box to the engine...

Moral: Check check and check again.

I read somewhere that someone put everything back together then noticed the clutch disk sitting on the work bench.

Sounds all too familiar. I'm the number one guy to leave some small cheapo insignificant part out upon reassembly, so's I always, always, always, always doublecheck 3 things:

The shop manual
The parts bin (that was stored in order of removal)
The new parts (gaskets and o-rings and other such collected new parts that have to go in)

#5 oil filter. We've got a car at work right now that made it about 3 or 4 miles out of a local "fast lube" joint after they did not put a new filter on it(and they took the old one off). And I suspect no oil either as the underside isen't as oil coated as you'de think.
Anyway, now it's got 9500 miles and a bad motor. Yup that's less than 10k miles. On a Toyota, that would be oil change number 2. ( our interval is 5000)
But they saved at least 2 bucks by going to the lubie station. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

At least when my cousin left the drain plug out he noticed the puddle under the car as he backed away and thought "Where'd that come from?" 'course, he did put oil in it...

Aa quick lube that saves on filters and oil... bargain prices, no problem.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Re: When you rebuild your car double check everyth

Something to consider would be to mark with a magic marker all the bolts/nuts that have had a final tightening.
Simon.

Only to encourage them to build better ones.
