When do you replace things?

I had a 1987 Range Rover Classic with no coil and the ignition module malfuntioned and startled the engine hard enough to brake the plastic fan , put a outward dent in hood and run rough all the way home. Module was $50, converted to ealier coil for shelf stock and drove 2 more years.
 
Washed the wife's car last week and drove it hard to make sure all was proper. Next day we decided to take it for a drive and on a 60 mph downshift got the shudder of not wanting to go. No light. Brought home dropped wife and took out until I got a hard code. Cyl 3 misfire, came back switched 3 and 4 went for code then 4cyl misfire. OK a 2011 MINI Countryman S Turbo with $55K miles. On went 4 new iridium plugs and 4 new coils. All better now. Never had the new coils go under 100K.
 
I have driven British cars since my first Sprite in 1978. I have never had a coil failure either. Have replaced a few, just because it wasn't running right and I had a spare. I replaced on my TR250 because (in reverse of the old adage) I thought I had an electrical problem, but I had a carburator problem.

Anyway, coil swap is too easy of a fix, those easy fixes never work for me!

I will add that I am talking about old fashioned coils, I have had to replace the individual coil packs on modern cars several times.
