wheel well deflectors

Is anyone running wheel well deflectors on their car? These are the plastic/fiberglass items that fit inside the wheel well and keep dirt etc. from flying up into all the nooks and crannies. Vicky Brits and I think Rimmer carry these.
 
Hi,

Those are popular with some vintage racers who are running cars fitted with lightweight fiberglass fenders. Last time I looked, in some classes SCCA allows reducing TR2/3/4 to something like 1850 lbs in racing trim (I dunno if their specs are similar for TR6) and thin fiberglass panels go a long way toward putting the car on a diet. But, thin fiberglass can be damaged pretty easily by road debris.

Personally, I'd think twice about putting them on a street car with steel fenders. I would be concerned about dirt and/or moisture getting trapped behind and causing more problems than they prevent. Maybe that's not a concern, if they seal well at th eedges or if they are easily removed for a proper cleaning.
 
The other thing I would be worried about is rust forming where you drill any mounting holes. I'd be even more worried if no mounting bolts were used at all. Just my 2 cents worth.
 
I think the benefits far outway any negatives. Think, on the TR6 the inner fender baffle plates have 4-5 bolts holding them in place right in-line with wheel splash. Of course they are typically covered by any aftermarket undercoating or simply the grime of 30 years. I'm most concerned with the rear wheel wells. The space between the inner and outer fender is wide open with numerous locations to catch and hold debris and moisture. Particularly the tail light box and rear valance shelf. Believe me I know, I've spent the last week cleaning the bottom of the body tub which is off the frame. The only rust I've found thus far on the sheet metal is the inner rear shelf. Not that modern cars are always better but they sure are better engineered when it comes to rust prevention and moisture management.
 
My TR4A has them. They were in there when I got it. I never looked that closely at them, all I know is they are heavy black plastic.
They work well at keeping the rainwater from splashing through the rust holes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
If I was building a nice TR for heavy road use I would install them to help keep the upper fender seam dry (you know, where they always rot out)
