Wheel spacer for a BJ8 needed, help please

AUSMHLY said:
Randy, I cant' get my head around it either. Just repeating what the Healey mechanic said. He's been a British mechanic for over 40 years. He's almost always spot on.

I'm coloring outside the lines here by asking my own question about maybe it's the rear end.

And maybe it's not hitting a pot hole, but my pushing the car through some of the corners. Can you blame me, it's so much fun.

I will jack the car up tomorrow and take the measurements.
Nice to see you guys taking interest in my situation.
Who am I kidding thinking my car will ever REALLY be done.I did have a nice stretch there where I wasn't working on something.
Party on.

My wife always laughs when someone asks when my car will be done, or what I'm going to do with it when it's finished (which is a really stupid question__I'm going to drive it until it needs to be taken apart again...).

Because the Articulated A-arm on my rear axle lowers the roll-center, when cornering (really) hard, I too can put a mark on the inner fenders, but mine are marked on both sides (and high-in the center) so I don't loose any sleep over it.

Measure your car's axle location in relation to the inner fenders, and let us know.

If there is less distance on the drivers side, can I adjust the rear end to move over to that side?

If so, how do I do it?

If directions are easy and I can do it alone, you know what I will be doing tomorrow.

Hello AUSMHLY,

As far as I'm aware there is no adjustment on anything to do with the body placement. Except for a big hammer and an oxy/acetylene set.

You could take a nylon faced hammer to the inner fender (where it shows the rub marks) and "dress it back".

Another solution is to remove a rear spline take it to your local machine shop and have them make up a spacer from some 1/8" steel or alloy plate with the same OD/ID and hole position using the spline as a template. The stud holes only need to be the same size as the studs themselves but if they are as large as the holes in the spline it won't make any difference.

Best regards,

bundyrum.

That would be hard in that location. There are 3 pieces of sheet metal converging there, the seat surround, and the two pieces that make up the rear bulkhead. Highlighted in red.

Up to speed I think.
The mark is from pushing the car though turns and having the tire flex.
Shouldn't be happening and reason it hasn't shown before? Maybe I never drove her like I stole her. Once you get used to how your car handles, it really fun to see what she can do. And I like it! And it shows!

Now on to find out why it rubs and make the fix.

I didn't have time to jack her up and take the measurements. I'll share it with you guys once I have.
Party on

Hello AUSMHLY,

Is that what you're worried about?.

What tire pressures are you using?. Too little and the tires will flex a bit.

The spacer will take care of that amount of rubbing and allow you to enjoy your Healey as you want.

Hello GregW,

I had a thought that this is where it would be rubbing just after I'd sent the reply so yes it would be difficult to "dress it out" right there. I somehow don't see that style of wheel catching on unless people want to rally their cars and who would want to do that eh.

Best regards,

bundyrum.

I think they'll work more for the BJ8 crowd. You just need to match the wood spokes to the dash. Tie it all in, so to speak.

Hello GregW,

Great idea, I honestly didn't think of matching the wood on the wheels to that on the dash.

See when you don't have a wooden looking dash you don't think of getting wooden wheels.

Sorry for this, but you could say, "It wooden work for my car".

Best regards,

bundyrum.

Are you serious? You've got your knickers in a twist over that little black mark on your inner fender well? Put some more air in your tires!

I see from your 23 posts Richard you may be new to this forum or don't post much. But your reply (sarcasm) is not helpful. The point being made, is that black mark shows there's a possible problem. It turns out there was. And with the help of the friendly knowledgeable people here, I've now fixed the situation that caused it.

Anyone else want a piece of me...LOL.
Cheers

Hello AUSMHLY,

No this is not because I want a piece of you but more in the line of a little support. I'm glad it wasn't me that said that about your Knickers.

Hello BoyRacer,

My intention here is not to make you feel bad or upset in any way.

I think the comment is a little off hand. What you obviously don't quite understand is that there are people here who are just a little concerned about their cars when they see something that doesn't appear to be right. There are those who do not have the ability to look at something and be able to say whether or not it is a serious issue. It's not their fault they do not have that ability. There is nothing wrong with that it's who they are. They are here to get answers from people who may just have an ability to explain things in a way they can understand. There are certainly not here to have sarcasm directed their way when all they wanted in the first place was a simple answer to their question. Please try to take it easy on people in this forum we need them around and hopefully even learn from them.

Best regards,

Bundyrum.

I assume you know this already but it might be worth checking anyway. The rear springs have bolts through the center where the axle sits. These bolts are made to go through holes in the mounting plate on the axle. I had one not aligned properly and through off my alignment. You can actually see a gap between the springs and the mounting bracket, I put a light behind the springs and looked from the other end, if you see light you're not making contact.

Worth checking.
