As I was investigating a vibration at interstate speeds, I found the front wheel bearings were loose. A definite click and movement when I grabbed the top of the wheel and shook it to and fro. When I took it a part to clean and repack (I should have read the book) I found that it did not have the wheel spacer or any shims for taking up the end play. I think the previous owner must have repacked and did not replace them as he thought they would be re-assembled and adjusted by tightening until the wheel started to grab and then backing off to the next pin alignment similar to my boat trailer. My freind , who is very mechaniclly inclined could not believe that tapered bearings couldn't be assembled that way either. The service manual says to entrust to the local dealer and did not go into much detail. I did find it in the shop manual but obviously was written for the trained mechanic. Has anyone experienced this minor phenomenon? I've packed lots of wheel bearings, but never had to adjust end play. Maybe I don't get around much! Any tips would be appreciated.
