a 1275 engine and trans vs a 1500 engine and trans? both the 1275 and 1500 need rebuilding. i'm entertaining a trade : my 1275 for a 1500 to match my midget? any input would be appreciated.

I just sold 2 rebuildable non siezed 1275s for $100 each.
I heard of a 1500 that just sold on Ebay for .01 cent.
I had trouble giving away a 1500 myself.

If originality is greatly important to you, then a 1500 is the more valuable engine. The 1275 has more performance parts available for it, and at a more reasonable cost. Also there is a 5-speed kit that can be fitted to the 1275 to use a datsun 5speed (not cheap), but cheaper than the 1500 5 speed kit which will most likely need an imported transmission.

I've driven both. The 1500 seemed to pull alot better at low rpms, but didn't like to spin up as fast as the 1275. I think you can get more miles out of a 1275 before needing a rebuild than a 1500.

I'd go with the 1275, but I'm slightly biased.

interesting opinions. i checked the stamp on the 1275 and it is as follows: 12c/da/h 26831. assume 12 means 1275 but the rest of it?. sounds like the 1275 is a better rebuild but is it hard to make a 1500 car accept a 1275 engine/trans?

It is easier to put a 1275 in a 1500 car than put a 1500 in a 1275 car, but there are still a few issues. I hope someone can fill in the details. I think someone on this board did this a few years ago. I don't have my reference book, but I think that motor is an 8.8:1 1275 engine from about 1971. Does the head have air rail ports on the plug side?

The 1500 won't fit in the 1275 car without serious (read: BFH & sawsall) modifications - & why would anybody want to put a tractor engine in a car?

Now, if you have a 1500 car, that's the engine you need to use as there are also some problems with putting a 1275 in it!

I've a ompletely disassembled 1500 engine that only needs bearings & rings that I'm having a hard time giving away!

Tony, I'll be there tomorrow to pick it up...lol. Seriously, I am in the middle of a 1500 rebuild. I am going to have to punch mine and grind the crank. I would love to talk to you about the engine you have.

You're not far away...whoever built it, put wrong size bearings in it so it wouldn't turn...

1275s go where 1500s were with no trouble at all.
The Midget was altered to fit the 1500 Triumph engine.
There is a depression on the front frame rail fopr the pulley, it is no longer an issue with the 1275. You will need the 1275 radiator but I did see a guy use some BMW hoses to make the 1500 radiator work.
If you have all the 1275 parts, alternator, carbs, motor mounts with bases, etc and a pre 75 radiator, it's all bolts right in.

In addition to the radiator, are there with the exhaust?
