MGB What's it worth...78 MGB

I had the local tow service (a fella I unfortunately know all too well) call last night and said there is an MGB coming into town on a trailer and the guy wants to sell it. The owner called me and I went out to his house to check it out. It is a 78 MGB roadster that is in fairly decent condition. The car is still on the U-Haul auto transport. The guy turned the key on and it cranked first time (My TR6 won't do that). The obvious to me is the car appears rust-free. The paint job is actually pretty decent (a variant of BRG) but all the rubber on the body is original and needs to be changed, including the windscreen gasket. The front valance below the bumper is distorted but no apparent wreck damage. The engine has headers and a Weber DGV carb. The owner is going back home to Minneapolis and will leave the car down here in Louisiana. My wife wants it but that ain't gonna happen.
Told the guy I would try to help him sell it. Any ideas what it is worth. Nothing in it for me. I could get some pics if someone really wants to see it. The top is nice (tan) and the interior is pretty decent. Again, could find no real rust. But consider it is 99* outside and I wanted to go home.

????? What's up with that?

If I was looking for a RB B, I guess I'd expect to pay between $5k and $6k for what you describe, a seller would want more of course.
Others......

I really think I could get it for 5K for someone. Needs new rubber bumpers, etc.

Something strange in his story...why's he leaving it behind? Where's it titled right now?

A rustfree MG would sell higher in Minneapolis than down in Louisiana!

You are right, Tony, it seems strange. The guys story doesn't really hold water but I told him to show me a clear title and I would help him sell it. He ain't too smart, but the car might end up with good papers. He is originally from Louisiana and lives in Minneapolis. Wants to leave the car at him mother's house. We shall see. Will keep the MG forum posted. Might be a good deal. Or maybe not.

The later rubber bumper MGs's are not as desirable (generally speaking) Chrome bumper ones, but prices for solid ones are creeping up. If you advertise broadly and the interior is in the high end of serviceable I think you could get $5K for her but it might take a bit of promotion unless she is really clean inside as well.

When you see the car again, lay down on the passenger floor & look up under the dash for mud or silt....or a recent color change.
