What to do with old computer cables.

Several years ago I picked up a lot of computers and parts. Included was a large box of computer cables, printer cables, ribbon cables, etc.... I need to get rid of them, but I don't want to just throw them out. No one around here accepts this stuff for donations and I don't think anybody recycles them. Any ideas?

That's copper in the wire cables. Current rates for insulated copper wire are about $1/pound. Shouldn't be too hard to find a place to scrap it and get a couple of bucks for the effort. I don't know about the rest of the stuff you have. Old computers do have small amounts of silver and gold in them, but generally, aren't worth much.

I thought they would only take bare wire. HMMMM Eeenteresting!

Yeah, you'll have to burn it off. Call your local atr legue and ask them for the contact info on their mixed media artists.

We sell copper bearing stuff all the time here at work. We don't burn anything off. We do sort it to get the best price, and insulated wire will get more then copper bearing metal that has iron or other garbage associated with it. Either way, anything with copper in it will get decent money if the percentage is good, as it is in wire and cable.

If you do decide to burn the insulation off, it will at least double the value, but unless you're rigged up to do that, it just ain't worth it.

scrap yards around here will not accept wire and the like if they can tell that you burned the insulation off. They don't want you doing that. They also don't accept aluminum road signs.

4 old computers, mower engines, scrap etc.... $27
50 lbs of assorted copper products $42
Helping green up the enviroment (mostly mine) Priceless!!!

If you burn wire (on purpose) be very careful. The smoke and fumes that are generated for example from PVC, are toxic.
