What to do with all my "Stuff"?

I was just out in the garage, looking around.
I need to put what I need in one area,& put all of
the "stuff" that I've collected,or saved,& never use
again.
If anyone's interested - do I list it here - or go
right to craigslist/eBay?
I'm sure that there are more people like me out
there. We just can't stand to see things thrown away.

Re: What to do with all my "Stuff"?

I'm with ya, Doug! The church is having a yard sale Saturday after next, and I've already warned Janet that I'll be purging some of our closets, storage rooms and garage.

Pack rats - that's what we are!

My wife has been calling me that for years, I don't know why! Just because I might save a few things? I did concede though, if I haven't used it within 5 years, it goes on the other side of the barn! Now I need a bigger barn!:jester:

Re: What to do with all my "Stuff"?

My finding is that no one wants my junk
Must be lo class junk

Re: What to do with all my "Stuff"?

Doug - could you be a little more specific on the "stuff" you want to sell?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Thanks.

If your goal is to reduce clutter (a good and noble goal, and a personal quest of mine) then here's my plan/advice, which as always is worth what you paid for it.

1. Donate every bit you can. Find a local church doing a flea market, or your local Salvation Army or similar, and give away everything you can. Many will come pick the stuff up if there's enough.

2. The rest is probably just trash -- if the donation/flea market sorts don't want it, then chances are no one does. Take what you can to the local recycle center, and the rest to the dump.

3. Promise yourself you won't let it all accumulate again. This is the key step, and the hardest.

You can certainly try and sell what you can. Without knowing what you have, it's hard to say what the values are. Recent electronics, some tools, these things have some monetary value to folks. Most other things we have stacked in our garages have precisely zero cash value to anyone else, no matter what you paid for them originally. It's basic supply and demand, and most of us have our own supply piled up in our own garage.

My wife and I try and do a yearly purge, and they've gotten smaller each year as we've gotten good at keeping the clutter out. It's a great feeling to be on the other end, but it does take constant work.

Good luck, Doug. We're pulling for you!

I think this whole thread should have been encrypted. If our significant others thought for a minute that we grasped the concept of too much stuff.....

I don't know about this, I don't seem to have enough stuff yet :jester:

Re: What to do with all my "Stuff"?

There's a lot .... 100+ metal beer can openers,a box of International
wheel cylinders,a set of International king pins (all NOS),new seat rear-
seat belts from a '79 Malibu police car,a new master cylinder & brake booster
for the same,a suicide knob,a Motometer for a Model A,lots of Cortina parts,
boxes of Datsun B210 parts,and,and....
I'd like to sell it off,& pay some bills down, just trying to figure out
the best place to list it.

I used to put a lot of car/bike parts up on ebay. They take a long time to sell, can be annoying to sell, and you won't make a great profit. Especially with specialty items like what you (and I) have for sale. People buy running boards for Caprice Classics. A Motormeter for a Ford Model A is something that would only be used by someone that needs that part.

The good part is that the parts sell themselves. If you put up a couple of decent pictures and a quick write-up, they should sell eventually and for some money.

I would burn/throw away anything that is not a mechanical part, or particularly valuable.

I don't like selling on Craigslist because I don't like strangers calling me. Ebay is all online usually.

Re: What to do with all my "Stuff"?

I go out in my garage....and see stuff that's been there for years that doesn't fit anything I have owned for years....and I load it up and haul it to the metal recycler.
I hate to dump electronics.....keeping the reel-to-reels, 8-tracks, eq's, SW RX, SW TX, amps, all stored away safely.
About ready to dump the Half Zero trains.....restored most of them, but I'm out of room.

Re: What to do with all my "Stuff"?

"half zero"?

Re: What to do with all my "Stuff"?

H0. Maerklin......1,2,3,4,5 gauge....when motors got small enough, they said, oh, carp (sp), what to we do now? Half Naught!
Then the nmra took over with their really brilliant identfiers......S, N, Z, and a whole bunch of others I could list.
S used to be called H1, (half of #1 gauge), but them guys were smart...they didn't want to be called half of anything.....so "S" it became. The H0 guys aren't so quick.

I have some HO Maerklin stuff myself. Let me know what you have if you are going to dump them. Mine are from the 60's and it seems the new collectors want to rewire them, so demand is not as great for the older stuff as it was years ago, but my nephew loves them.

Re: What to do with all my "Stuff"?

I've got a big box of solid three rail track, some caternary (rusty), some signals, one 0-6-0 steamer, two Fleishmann (old) coaches (4-wheel), and two old 4-wheel Fleishmann flats.
All the rest is Varney, Mantua, English, PennLine, various vintages back to pre-war.

I've been waiting 2-1/2 years for parts...the guy is still there, just can't get the parts out of him...disgusted, I am.

Re: What to do with all my "Stuff"?

What parts do you need. The Markin forum would be a place to find them or get directions where to look.

Re: What to do with all my "Stuff"?

I'm always on the lookout for new-old goodies for the HO layout. Maybe we could make a deal? I run all my trains old-school no digital cabs here.
as for the rest of my junk..... I've been slowly working on clearing out except for the few hobbies I really enjoy.
Music, trains/models, small engines, art, reading, camping. Crud.. I'm beginning to see my issue.

Re: What to do with all my "Stuff"?

Still looking at it all. I just got, last month a big bag of Mantua couplers to finish off anther couple of dozen cars......and I have some paper-sided Varneys that have warped-inwards sides, got them apart, just got the pink rigid foam to put inside to fix them.

Nephew was by yesterday, he may want his and his dad's stuff back some day. 4 BIG boxes....but I have about 8 more big (and little) boxes...cars, track, switches, crossings in degrees I didn't know they made.

Threw all the Botchman "steel" track out...once it surface corrodes, there is no way other than a body grinder to get it to be conductive again.
