Just a simple question for the nice people on BCF:

Is it better to have a job with a company that has no idea when they are going to be able to pay you again(3 weeks no pay now and counting) Or is it better to just ask to be layed off and go on unemployment, while there are no jobs to go to.

I am just wondering what other peoples thoughts would be in this situation. I am at a stand still.

I can't suggest anything without more info, e.g.

Has your current employer treated you well in the past? Do you trust them to pay you if business gets better? Are they sensitive to the fact that you are subsidizing them and compensating you in other ways? What are the skills involved? What are their priorities as to who's getting paid - are they paying their executives/owners before paying their utility bills or employees, for example? Have they offered a reduced paycheck? It all comes down to trust.

And are you ~sure~ there are no jobs available?

Hmmmm? Three weeks is a long time to go without pay. I'm not sure what your limits are, but mine would be about 3 weeks.

Is your boss telling you they don't know when you'll get paid? Are they paying others?

Also, are you absolutely sure there are no other jobs available? My area (NJ) has been decimated by the economic downturn and people say there are no jobs here all the time. But I see Helped Wanted ads in local retail stores, trucking firms, the local Post Office, etc.

Since they are taking some "time off" from paying you, maybe you should take some "time off" and go out looking real hard for another job.
Speaking personally, I'd much rather have almost any job than be on unemployment.....if that is possible.

I guess the question is also; what are your skills, training and education?
What is your minimum salary requirment?

Part of my job involves being a Co-op work coordinator for my local community college engineering program. All of the jobs my students get are entry-level (in NJ that's rougly $8 to $16 per hour). I have six students doing Co-op right now and all the companies they work for are looking for more entry-level workers. These companies include a local HVAC contractor, a local CNC machine shop, a company that builds hardware for bridges, UPS and Fed-Ex. Yesterday, I got a call looking for a student with machine shop and CAD training to work in a company that makes bone implants and artificial knees.

One skill that seems to be very useful for many of my guys is a knowledge of AutoCAD. It can be useful in everything from logistics to engineering to property management to landscaping to HVAC to warehousing layouts, medical support, real estate, environmental work, etc.

G'luck!

I have to agree that AutoCad skills will always
be in demand. As A/E and other design firms are
forced to reduce payroll, they begin to outsource
AutoCad drafting services.

An entry level AutoCad job (you as a sub-contractor
freelance)gets your foot in the door and the experienced
draftsmen will increase your AutoCad skills very quickly.

Many places offer basic AutoCad learning courses.
Community collegs, VoTech high schools, AutoCad
software sales centers.

It's worth a look-see

dale - just my $2 cents

If you have a job, it is easier to find a job, simple statement of fact. While you are still able to say that you are employed I would say the same as Nial, go out there and agressively look for something else.

Join LinkedIn if you are not on there already, make sure that your profile is current, then start looking for and connecting with old friends and former colleagues who might also be on there. Then start spreading the word.

There are several potentially useful groups on there, and on Facebook. I can point you in the right direction andmaybe even make some introductions on your behalf if I happen to already know the right people.

PM me with your contact info if you would like to explore this, and I'll lead you through the process.

Since the start of this year this has happened about every three weeks. But checks usually are in by the following monday.(we get paid every friday)

The owner would also come out every Friday and say what was going on and apologize for the inconvience.

Two Fridays ago they came out and said they were waiting on a transfer from Mexico to start three new units. And that we would be compensated with a bonus check (like the last time, which was 150.00) Well this is now coming up on the third Friday and still no checks (not even one) and the owner hasn't even had the guts to come and say why. We just assume at 15min to 4:00 that we aren't getting paid. So you could say "TRUST" is not a word used around here any more.

Well I was going to take the layoff yesterday but found out that if I do that this crooked company may not pay me my back pay. So now I am in a pickle of what I can do.

As far as jobs around here they are slim to none. All I have ever done is construction and its the hardest hit market right now. I left a 55k a year job last July to move back to FL to be near my family again (after being gone for 8yrs) I was the installation supervisor for an epoxy floor co. in MS. The main reason was I was tired of traveling and never seeing my wife or kids. I really don't want to do that again, but if I have to I will.

But that is the run down of the situation I am in.

I took 5 years of Autocad/drafting classes in HS. I did love it but was to dumb at the time to follow it (Oh the regrets we make)

I am how ever looking at either going back to school for it or I am going for diesel mech.. But seeing as I have a morgage, kids, and way to many bills. Time for school and work is slim to none

they would be here to but no one has reported it yet.

We all fear that they will file bankruptcy and we are just screwed then

Well, aren't you (in your words) being screwed now? Why wait?

To be honest I don't know why. I do know that if we don't have a check by Friday I am but I don't know why I don't do it now.

all I can guess is that I keep hoping that they will pay us and we go back in to full swing again.

But on the other hand hopes and dreams aint paying my bills!

You should try and find out if the insurance premiums (medical) are being paid. It would not be good to get hurt on the job only to learn that the policy's have lapsed.

I do know that that is paid. As is our regular insurance. My mom is a nurse around here and I had her run my insurance through her office and they said it was still good.

I would say to start working on the resume and checking help wanted ads now. If you don't have the paycheck or a very good explanation by Friday at the end of work, also report them to the state and to get your claim ready in case of a Bankruptcy filing for owed wages. I would be proactive, but not vocal or argumentative in this situation...

thanks for the advise.

I've already got my resume out there and am looking online and applying so hopefully something hits soon

LilJohn,

If you've had several years of AutoCad in HS,
you'll be able to get up to speed on the latest
versions easily. They are MUCH more user friendly.

You can download a 30 day trial version of A/C
here: Play with it and see what you remember.

https://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=2704278

I know there are several of us here on the BCF
who use A/C daily and would be willing to give
you pointers.

best of luck in your job hunt. Things are bad here
on the island as well. 14% unemployment and climbing.

As far as income goes, check out local jobs on line such as on Craigslist! There are many and varied temp to permanent positions listed. Central Fl. is kinda "out there", but a commute to the east or west coast might find you a job not too far away from your family! I too would urge you to contact the state! The company you are working for without pay does not sound like they are going about this right! What are you working on for them? If you are producing for them, then they must be selling whatever you are doing! I personally could not go through what you are for three weeks!!

One other thing to check: in many states, you're only eligible for unemployment benefits if your employer has been paying unemployment insurance taxes on its employees,

If they're behind in your pay, they may also be behind in paying unemployment taxes.
