Just fired up my BJ7 for the first time to tune the carbs and the temp gauge was showing about 190f after a while, is this the normal operating temperature ?
It seems to me that the engine could easily get hotter & seem to remember people talking about problems with healeys overheating.
I had a look through some books i have but could not see any reference to engine temp.

If it goes to 190 and stays there, it's probably being controlled by the thermostat. Sounds OK to me. Heating problems usually surface when forced to idle in traffic with high ambient temps.

Yes 190 is a good operating temp, you say you just started it up, did you just rebuild the motor? don't know if you have the hood (bonnet) removed, but I kept mine off for awhile after the motor rebuild on my 100, didn't look as pretty, but it sure ran cooler.

Maybe not as much an issue for you guys in the cool damp UK.
 
You are in the UK so a 190 deg thermostat should be fine for all running purposes. The healey overheats in traffic in places like Hong Kong or California where it can get hot - that's the problem.

Get her moving, that temprature will come down. 190 degrees static is about the norm for the UK, also depends on the time of the year, summer very warm winter pleasant that's when you are moving of course.
