What sealer material to use top of windscreen?

Anybody know what is used to seal between the top of
the windscreen and the aluminum finish strip that is
riveted on at the top of the windscreen?

Some kind of "tape-looking" gummy material is what it
looks like was on there when I took it apart.

The body shop used a 3-M non hardening sealer when they did mine, but I don't know the actual number. I know that it was black, but probably comes in clear as well.

Clear RTV would be my choice.

IIRC, there was nothing under it from the factory.

Doc,

Ask me how I know that the sealer was black.

There was a gap on my sealer after the installation below and when I was driving home from a show in the pouring rain, the water was dripping onto my lap from the sun visor bracket area.

The stainless trim cover had to come back off and the sealer was replaced. No further problems in two rain storms.

I think I better quit attending shows on cloudy days!

3M Strip Calk, #051135-08578. Very similar to butyl for "modern" windshield seals but without the adhesive properties. Good stuff, and likely what yours is, Paul. I have used RTV clear for its "removability". The 3M stuff is messy/gooey to get off. Worse than RTV (believe it or not)!

You can get the tape looking gummy stuff from a glass shop in various widths.

I think it is called Butyl Rubber Caulk Strips. Martin Senour makes it and it is available from NAPA. I use it for fake rubber grommets in the firewall. Sticks to itself, adheres to other surfaces yet is removable when need be.

Worst stuff to use IMHO. Way too runny to seal anything. (been there, done that) If you have any gaps, it runs off. Butyl tape is about the best, if you can find it anymore...

I think we're talkin' apples 'n oranges, 'stang57: Permatex RTV vs. construction RTV. The Permatex has a stiffer consistency, not 'runny'.

Perfect timing for me on this topic. I had to remove the aluminum cap last summer and have forgotten where the caulking goes. I thing there was just one strip across the rivit holes. Is this correct?

Thanks, Kevin

Next question: Does it matter if I put the windscreen
cap on before the glass goes in or after?

Seems if these guys happen to scratch a finish that
touch-up painting would be easier if the cap was
still off the windscreen. Seems to be the only reason
to have the glass in first.

Any other thoughts on the subject?
