TR4/4A What kind of wheels for TR4A?

I want to buy some wheels this summer for my TR4A (currently steel). What is the consensus, Minilite(replica) or Wire? If Wire, painted or chrome ? Price is not likely going to drive the decision. I keep hearing bad things about wire wheels, otherwise I'd go with them.

The car is dark green, black top. Overall it is quite original. Please comment.

Wires. That's what I did. They look great, classic. I drive around the rural fringes of Town. And short trips, 40 to 60 miles.

If I had planned really long trips I might have considered Minlites, but even then I figured that's an option five years down the road if it ever comes to that. For now, I wanted the car to retain its pure, classic look and felt Wires were more true to that end.

Just taste and opinions. My Wires get comments and turn heads. Good luck.

P.S. There's a big thread on this already. The opinions were rather split, but Wires and Minlites were the favorites as I recall.
 
I meant "Minilite." I also like the look of the Knock Off Sport Wheel that resembles the Minilite. But still would opt for Wires for a first choice.
 
The American Racing Silverstones, a factory option, look great on this model. Far better than the minilites. After that, wires and then the stock disc wheel.

I just bought the car last August. The first thing I did was buy tires, and some tire dealers said they would not install if I had wires (no tooling). I also remember as a teen ager a front wire wheel on my dad's Spitfire turning on the spindle and backing off while driving. So although I like the look of wires, I have a bias against them.

Currently the car vibrates a lot, and all the wheels have a lot of balance weights hung on them. Although this is probably the tires I bought, I suspect the current wheels may be not so good.

I thought about buying the trim rings that Victoria British sells as a way of dressing up the car, but I understand they can come off.

if you just want to "show" your car, wires. they look great. personally i don't want any wheel problems so if you are considering minilites i'd go with those. if cost is not an issue then get real minilites.look at the weight of the wheels you buy. less weight=more grip. magnesium is light but i would not recommend for the street. it can break easier than aluminum and you cannot let them corrode, which they do. magnesium must be carefully maintained. if you hit a curb, you should get them x-rayed.

Buy what you like best. Wires are higher maintenance. Cleaning alone can be an entire afternoon or more. Minilites are basically maintenance free. Very easy to clean.
I have Dayton chrome wires on my TR3 that look fantastic. But I constantly get compliments on my TR6's Panasports.
The Panasport is a very solid wheel. The wires allow for more flex. Either would look great on a 4.
Personally, chrome wires though still looking good, get lost in lighter colored paints while standing out sharply against dark colors. Sounds like fashion design.
 
Depends on the amount of driving. If you plan to drive your car alot, I would say the Panasports. I don't drive my TR4 that much and like wire wheels.
