I have sooo many Spitfire parts I could scream... Just not the right ones, I came accross this in one of my boxes of "stuff" while doing some spring cleaning.

So what is it? I know VW used something like this to get the car back to the dealer every 60k. So, what is it?
 
I believe it's the same sort of thing, an "emission counter" to tell the owner when to have the catalytic converter serviced. Went in the speedo cable, lit a light on the dash.
 
I agree with Randall.... The late 6's also had and service interval counter and that looks exactly like what you have.
 
Those used to mount on the firewall near the wiper on a TR6.
 
It's a count-down to self destruct mechanism,similar to the one on the star ship Enterprize.That one still has a lot of life left in it and could be dangerous in the hands of a Klingon.Really it is a service indicator and if I remember my Triumph dealership mechanic days of long ago,you would take a medium sized cotter pin and grind the ends to a point to twist the little post with two small holes on the side to reset it.Dash light goes out,make the sign of the cross,close bonnett,and charge $50 bucks.Beat car on back road test drive and service is complete!
 
$50?? How long ago was THAT??? Be more like $500 today!! LOL :laugh:

Could be worse ... the function was basically mandated by US emissions law at the time. On my 1980 Chevy, it was built into the speedometer mechanism, and you actually had to disassemble the dash to reset it by poking a sharp object into the odometer.

For some odd reason, it stopped working after the second reset :laugh:
 
I wish it was $50.00 today. What was the shop rate then?

It was back in the mid seventies when dinosaurs roamed the earth.Put out the light 10 seconds. Hardest part was getting the bonnett open but working flat rate,that kind of job sure helped my pay check.Was it actually work or was it playing with Triumphs? I live in a different world of LBC's. I've seen the kind of money being dropped on these cars and I'm amazed. They're all just big lawn mowers that are fun to drive.Maybe I should get a white lab coat and a Jackie Stewart hat and rake in the big bucks! You can quickie tune a TR4 with a test light,feeler gauge,screw driver,and rubber hose,for crying out loud.
