What is this funny thing behind the rear wheel?

I took off the left rear wheel on my TR4A for the first time this evening, and found the following strange appendage behind the wheel... what is it?

(This is my first Triumph and my first restoration... I do not have many posts here as I am going at this slowly.)

Never seen that before ... looks like maybe someone welded in a patch and left a tab to grip it by ?
 
Is it rubber? Could it be a mutilated bump stop? sure looks outta place what ever it is.

Strange looking thing. Is it a glob of weld? or
rubber? Can you unscrew it?

I've not got one on my car.
Try banging it with a hammer and see what happens.

Dale- did you do that to those front and rear bearings and your diff before or after you thought they needed replacement!

Hadn't seen the back end of a live axle 4a, but that has to be a bump stop as said before. Should also be another one on the other side.

As already mentioned, it is the suspension travel limiting rubber, which in the vernacular means "bump stop".
They are attached to the body of the car by a threaded rod, but after being there several years they do not like to unthread and will break off if you try to remove them.

Yes, I would say that it falls within the "fair use" doctrine -- not for commercial purposes, arguably for educational purposes, it's only a small portion of the entire copyrighted work, and wouldn't have an adverse economic impact on the copyright holder (they don't sell their catalog, and indeed, showing it in the manner you have might direct business to Moss). Yeah, get some penetrating oil of your choice and start soaking that down and you MIGHT be able to get it off. You might as well replace all of them while you are at it when the time comes.

The paper Moss catalog is always good for parts reference if you do not have the S-T workshop manual or parts manual.

It certainly would be OK to use/show that item. You did not re-publish it in your own work, all you did was to copy a link to a document that is still 100% in the control of its owner. It's like pointing to a sign on the street. You didn't take it, only pointed it out.

The lever shock appears it might need a little
routine maintenance and some oil added.

Your frame might need some attention (see red arrow). Looks like it has rusted through from the picture.

Thank you all for your input! I was away from the computer for a while, and returned to see over two pages of discussion. Impressive, this forum is!

Looks like a rubber bump stop - the link to the Moss catalog is correct, and I did find a picture of the stop in the factory manual, in the suspension section.

And about the rust: Thank you for the heads-up! In this case, however, what appears to be a rust-through spot is actually a piece of tree fuzz that we get here in the spring, hanging on a spider web.

Having said all that, I suspect I will find much more rust as I uncover. In the meantime, I am hammering and dollying... or attempting to hammer and dolly!
