TR2/3/3A What is the quantity of paint needed for a TR3 ?

I'm in the process of painting the 57. I have plenty of epoxy primer and have purchased 1/2 a gallon of PPG-DCC. I haven't painted a car in 15 years and was shocked at the price. My 1/2 gallon was $278.45 with hardener and reducer. Now that the sticker shock has subsided I am wondering if I will have enough paint. How much have you folks used on a complete top and bottom paint job? I estimated the surface square footage inside and outside of the TR3 at 275. Does that sound close? Unfortunately I read that a gallon only covers +/- 200 square feet.

You will find that 1/2gallon is good for all the edging of the main tub and floors in and out(in single stage paint)There are cheaper single stage paints that are fine for the floor pans and under sides. We use Lessonal 2.8 single stage acrylic-urethane for this type of edging, not the cheapest but still less than base clear, and faster. When and if you choose to edge with a different paint check the overall color match to make sure its up to standard.

I am painting my TR3 now, just about finished priming all panels and tub.It looks like I will be using most of the gallon of epoxy primer, which makes about 7 sprayable quarts.I am using Single stage and think the color coat will also use the entire gallon, again about 7Q.Figure a couple gallons of laquer thinner for gun cleaning,$16 a gallon at home depot.
Bought all my paint off internet from Ca.PPG Concept ss $260gallon,activator $75qt.
7qts to spray,for about $400.
Iam using ocnventional spray gun,and have heard HVLP would use about 25% less paint.
I think with BB/CC you could use 1gal BC,1.5-2 gal. clearThis is based on painting everything.Inside tub, floors trunk, inside fenders etc.
Have fun

Just had a TR6 painted. I estimated 3 quarts but bought a gallon (cheaper than buying 3 quarts). Glad I did, painter used just about all of it. Maybe 4 oz. left. We did do door jams and trunk as well. This new paint is cut thinner, 4/1 vs the old paint that was 2/1.

Using PPG DBC color with DCU2002 clear, it took me 5 quarts of color and 6 quarts of clear. This amount is NOT including the hardeners. I painted everything that was originally paintedinside, outside, and underside. I did have to re-spray the scuttle, but that was the only respray. My paint costs were my highest costs in the entire restoration...by a factor of at least 3!

If you are just doing the exterior surfaces, then 3 qts of color and 3-4 qts clear would be about right. If you are doing just the exterior, you may get by with 2 qts of DCC, BUT! you will have to have a very good color coordinated primer down and be VERY frugal with the paint.

Good luck,

John

It took me just shy of a gallon to do my TR3 in the garage (three coats). I had enough left to re-do one of the rear wings that got messed up (bunch of scratches) while in in storage waiting to get the rest of the car done. I blamed the cat but my wife blamed me for not storing it properly.

try buying RED, Dupont Chroma premier, 1000.00 a gallon and but I did use about 3 quarts. 3 quarts of clear, and painted the inside with a urethane that was less expensive, Nason which is duponts less expensive paint, I got a spot to touch up in the engine bay where the air filters scratched the paint off, should have removed the filters but I didnt, but cant see it unless I raise the hood so not in too big a hurry, got to take the manifold back off and replace the gasket, got an engine exhaust leak and I cannot get to the bolt. I guess I will get a couple of nuts and weld them together to make a LOng nut if I cannot find those long nuts

also you will waste a lot more paint if you paint the pannels as you finish them, instead of painting the whole car at one time, which is what I did, just because I wanted to get things finished and out of the way as the body work was finished
