What is the maximum amount of usable fuel?

I would like to know what is the maximum amount of fuel I can expect to get out of the 14.4 gallon tank. My car gets about 22 miles per gallon on the road and I would like to figure how far I can expect to go on a full tank of fuel. So far the most I have ever put in the tank is about 10.5 gal. How much of the last 4 gallons can I expect to use. My gas gauge shows empty at about 9 gallons gone. Thanks and have a good day.

John,

I suppose this may vary with year and model, but my '62 BT7 Tricarb (ctr shift) has 13.6 gal of usable3 tank capacity. I learned this by running it out of gas a week or so ago.

When it starts to get low, carry a two (2) gallon can of gas with you, and drive until it *starts* to starve for fuel.

A few assumptions...

That your fuel tank is nice and clean/free of debris (I never run a tank too low, for fear of sucking up trash).

Start with a full load of fuel in the tank

Any steady state cornering (or traveling uphill) will move the fuel away from the pickup tube.

Your *test* travels don't take you more than 44 miles from a gas station!

Use the results to determine how far you can go while still keeping a reserve of at least a couple of gallons of fuel (remembering that the pick-up is in the front of the tank, so going uphill WILL DEFINITELY run you out of useable fuel sooner__I know this for a fact, going UP Delores Street in San Francisco on April 1st, 1978__the first night I bought the car).

Seriously though, the only way you can determine your *safe* fuel range, is with your own car.

I would like to figure how far I can expect to go on a full tank of fuel.

Just do not push it past 250 Miles and you probably will
be safe.--Fwiw---Keoke--- :driving:
