Can someone tell me the best way to remove chrome from a piece without sanding it? I wanted to experiment with some chrome powder paint and see how it looks. After I remove the chrome I plan on bead blasting it, polishing it, and finally powder coating it. Any comments are greatly appreciated, Kevin

Thanks, M. Those articles gave me a lot to think about. I forgot about the different layers of metal to consider, as well as the byproducts produced by using the various acids to remove the metal. I think I will just try the advice of one of the article and just sand off any loose material and then powder coat.

You don't want to start doing this yourself. For one thing, a lot of "chrome" plating is really bright nickel with some kind of additions or surface treatment, and if you use the chrome-removal processes described on the Caswell site, you'll just dissolve the part. There are all kinds of metal surface treatments that look like something else, and it takes some experience and knowledge to deal with them.

In any case, if you're removing the chrome to replate, there's no need as the plating shop will do that. If you are painting, sanding will probably give you a better surface anyway.
