What have I got????

I purchased a bunch of parts from the second owner of the parts. Included was a engine which appears to be sound. It has obviously been overhauled and the engine tags have been removed. It has side covers over the tappets so I suppose it is a 1098. Is there any way to tell without a teardown whether it is a 10CG or a 10CC?? Could it be an early 12CC?? Thanks in advance, KA.

The block should have a part number cast into it. My memory is defective, but I think it's down low on the left-hand side. This will tell you some things, but not everything. The head also has a part number cast into it, but you will need to remove the rocker cover to see it.

If you have a copy of "Original Sprite and Midget" by Terry Horler, there is a wealth of detail in there which may help you find out what you have through a process of elimination. Or it may at least tell you what you DO NOT have.

For example on page 99 it says:

The new 1275cc Sprite/Midget engine's cast iron cylinder block was instantly recognizable because it had no removable tappet chest covers...

There are many other references throughout the book.

The top of the head towards the front is a space that extends out from the block for a couple of inches, that is where the original tag identifing the motor. However, if the head has been milled that tag goes away. A 948 or 1098 has side covers. Seems that some motors had a tag on the cover side, but since your motor doesn't have, that doesn't help either. You don't have a 1275.

Thanks for the input guys, I have a tappet cover with a vent tube instead of a flame arrester canister for the pcv connection so I suppose it is a 10CG engine. However it also has a late distributor spin on oil filter and alternator mounts so its a little hard to guess what the guy was up to. I don't have Horler's book. Of the 3 engines I have this one seems the tightest with the best compression. Wish it was a 1275!!
